  • '2nd Car' insurance 21 Oct 2004 (Forum)
    I am pretty sure that we were offered a '2nd car insurance policy' with the same NCD as our existing car. Can anyone suggest the cheapest way to insure our '2nd car' - a £600 1991 Volvo 940 GL estate? Paul {Forest of Bowland}
  • bad time to buy a 3 series? 19 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Don't really like the look of the imminent new A4, would never have another Merc, like Lexus but uneconomical petrol engines only, new Passat next year might be worth waiting for, Saab,Volvo,Honda etc don't appeal (car snobbery maybe, but residuals also, and not as good to drive) Reckon I can get £1500 off list on a new one; dealers seem to ask silly money for second hand ones, and whilst I'd buy second hand I wouldn't want anything more than a year old...
  • My next car ... 28 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I don't want to sell the Synergie privately, I am not comfortable in a Mondeo and I will only have another Volvo if the gates of Hell freeze shut. What other cars would you knowledgeable folk have me look at? Hawkeye ----------------------------- Stranger in a strange land
  • Non-leaky petrol can? 21 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Do any of the prestige car makers have a high quality one as an accessory that can be relied on not to leak or topple over on every corner? I used to have a Volvo metal can that fitted inside the spare wheel but even that leaked at the side seams after a while. Or should I be trying a marine chandler although they are a bit thin on the ground in the middle of England?

  • Xantia heater slow to warm up 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I could understand this if the car was stone cold, with a large difference between the ambient temperature in the car and the temperature requested, presumably because the fan would be blowing harder but with colder air; but this seems to occur even when the car has reached correct operating temperature. Other cars I've had with climate control (Galaxies, Rover 800, Volvo 850) have never acted like this.

Nice 5cyl warble but for the money 170bhp wasn’t enough. Volvo 740 Turbo - Fast in a straight line but steered like the titanic and every bit of speed you’d built up was lost when you used that clunky gearbox. Volvo 360 GLT - First attempt at a hot hatch for Volvo, an attempt to rival the Golf GTi and XR3.

  • Help me choose my next car 4 Aug 2025 (Forum)

  • Please help me choose a car ! 25 Jan 2025 (Forum)
Other criteria I'd like rather than must have include; Good for motorway use, nice interior, nice to look at, not French or Ford. I've been looking at things like the Volvo S60, Passat, Jag XF, C-class, smaller SUV's, VW CC, Infiniti Q50, that kind of thing.  Can anyone suggest something that might fit these criteria please ?
  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 1.8 Petrol: Any good reasons why not? 19 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Or otherwise I just do the daft thing and get that BMW 318i Tourer in fairly basic spec and reasonable miles............... Obvs that would be daft! Or Volvo 2008 to 2010 estates. Only diesels available around here though at the moment. The reviews on here though suggest the engines are prone to go pop? It may come down to going out and picking something essentially at random.
  • Polestar 2 - Test drive 24 Jun 2021 (Forum)
If you’ve ever driven something like a Nissan LEAF, you’ll know it has the capability to embarrass lots of cars away from the lights, but this is LEAF multiplied by a factor of plenty. 0-60 is quoted as 4.5 seconds, and the mid-range is equally quick. But at cruise, it has a glorious, Volvo-esque, interior, and the loudest noise you can hear is a bit of tyre noise. It’d be interesting to get it on the motorway to see how relaxed it is. The test drive is zero sales pressure as the only way you can buy a car is online.
  • Efficiency of Electric Cars 14 Oct 2020 (Forum)
I have just read  Andrew English's review of the Volvo XC40 in today's Daily Telegraph. He commented on a measurement I am unused to - Efficiency.   In an electric car measure by Range in miles (WLTP) divided by battery rated capacity in KWH..
  • Maximum Mileage of Long-Distance Coach 4 May 2019 (Forum)
Would you expect a big difference between coach brands in terms of ability to run to high mileages, for instance between the Yutong TC12 vs. Volvo 9900? When it did break down, what would you expect to go wrong? Engine? How realistic would it be to do a full refurb and then run it for another few years? Obviously, there's no exact answer but I was wondering if anyone could share any experience they have from other operators that cover a very high mileage per year?
  • 'Stylish' car under £1500 ..possible ? 10 Apr 2019 (Forum)

  • Audi A6 - Car Quality 17 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Cars don’t use a massive amount of carpet for their flooring, but the quality of carpet in the cars can range from really good in Volvo, Audi or Range Rover to poor quality in Kia's, Renault & Ford   Now if the quality of carpeting comes down to price, i really can’t see the price differential being massive between both for a certain meterage.
  • Any - Advice needed to buy first car in the UK 2 Jan 2016 (Forum)
My budget is max £2k, the cars that I've found interesting are : Nissan Almera Nissan pixo Peugeot 207 VW polo Volvo s40 I need help and advice to select a car, as my knowledge is not enough and I am confused, I don't know if a diesel one would be good for me as I will travel at least twice a week. Hope to hear soon from you with suggestions for any other car or questions.
  • Narrowed car choice down to 3 - any opinions? 10 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The diesels seem similarly priced to the I-Vtec so it makes sense to go with the diesel 08 plate Volvo S40 2.0D.  Same engine as the focus but a nicer place to be.  Similar price to the civic. 07 plate VW Jetta 1.9PD .  This makes the list simply because it's the cheapest way (besides a leon) I can get my hands on the VAG PD engine with it's legendary reputation.
  • Icy crash insurance question 9 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I pulled into the side of the road a short distance away whilst the two drivers exchanged details, and sat there with my hazard lights on to warn traffic approaching behind me. The two women had just started to move their cars when a Volvo came from the opposite direction and lost control on the icy road. He slammed into one of the cars, shunting it across the road straight into the front of my bus. A few second later, another woman approached and lost control in exactly the same manor, bouncing off the Peugeot that was embedded in my front bumper.
