  • what family car gives the best mpg at 80Mph 8 Oct 2022 (Forum)
My commute and job mean that I do not drive in towns, but travel on cruise at about 80Mph on the Speedo (75Mph on sat nav) and I am trying to work out what family car (2 kids) gives the best Mpg and overall running costs. Contenders initially were the ecoline cars such as the golf and focus, but at motorway speeds stop start and kinetic recovery do little and the engines labour as they are usually running higher revs etc.. also with colleagues driving petrol cars and getting 40mpg (2.0L 180ps A5 2010) and others driving diesels and getting 43mpg (octavia estate 2.0l 2008).
  • Looking for used car recommendations... 23 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I'm looking for something that fits the below criteria as best as possible but, there is wiggle room -   Cost up to £5k Reliable Reasonable running/maintenance costs Comfortable on long trips (300+ miles) Understated styling C or D class Not a complete "banger" but something I can run into the ground over the next several years   So far I've been looking at VW - Golf, Passat Audi - A4, A6 Volvo - S60, S80 Skoda - Superb, Octavia Seat - Exeo   Any recommendations on the above based on my criteria or any different suggestions?
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - engine chugging 28 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Hi, Having a few problems with my micra recently. When i drive off when the engine is cold it runs ok and doesnt chug/jerk. I can drive for more than an hour before the problems start. But as soon as i stop for more than a few minutes and leave the engine running (or turn the engine off for that matter), and then drive away, the car starts chugging/jerking quite bad.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction 2006 2.0 dci 115 Vivaro. Was running rough and jerking about. I swapped out the fuel filter as I don't know when that was changed as only had the van a year. I also swapped out the boost solenoid as it was making odd noises and rattled.

  • Electric Motor help 25 Jul 2020 (Forum)
i am currently working on seeing if a piece of equipment that is currently powered by a gas motor can be run off an electric motor being powered by a honda Eu2000i generator using an ac to dc convertor that goes to 2 12V batteries connected in series (motor runs of 24V) that pick up load spikes. The equipment weighs around 400 lbs and can move an additional 1000 lbs.
  • New car 12 Feb 2020 (Forum)
He drives 300+miles a week for work. His astra has just hit over 100,000 miles and totally gave up. It might be worth fixing for me to run about in but he needs something that is a bit more economical to run and doesn't have as many problems doing a load of miles. Hes currently spending around £360 on petrol a month. Firstly can someone recommend a decent car for us?

I think it's a 2litre?  Lots of equipment runs well but I found it sluggish and dull.  Seems a heavy vehicle.   Thirsty round town. Great hire car but I dont want to own one.  It's my opinion it's inferior to my Vitara S in pretty much every way.
  • Fabia II TDI 1.6 CR 2010 - Diesel Engine stalling. Blocked injectors? 29 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Hello, I run the tank down to 10miles remaining and since then it has cut out on hills and had some stutters when around 1000rpm. Just read that this car needs long runs and rev blasts to clean out the engine.
  • Any... - Small 4WD 11 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I've looked at a Jimny - fits all requirements except very dated and uncomfortable. Also a Panda 4x4 which seems to do rather better, and would be cheaper to run. Used to run a Yeti which would be fine for us except comparatively large, as is its successor. SWBO likes a high driving position which is a problem if looking for genuinely small cars. Tending towards the Panda as the best compromise.
  • Honda Accord 2011 - Clutch Judder When Reversing 19 Mar 2017 (Forum)
A couple of months ago I bought a used Honda Accord 2.0 petrol with a very low mileage. The car runs almost like new with one exception (i.e. the clutch). In normal running it is as smooth as can be with no noise or slippage but the problem comes when I come to reverse it up my fairly steep driveway, The engine note changes to a low rumble and the car judders really badly.
  • Volvo v70 1.6d - V70 cutting out 2 Feb 2017 (Forum)
When you throttle up at a standard rate and it will get to 3000rpm-ish then go in to limp/low power mode with the engine warning light on. If you continue to accelerate it will cut out. If you back off it will stay running in low power mode. Turn it off and restart and it resets back to normal. Floor the throttle and it will cut out immediately no warning given. . Tease it up with a very low throttle and it will happily run all the way up to the rev limiter.
  • Ford Fiesta - 2009 1.6 diesel timing issues 26 Jul 2016 (Forum)
This was done at less than 84,000  Since then the fuel seems to not last as long, although it has been a while since i filled it full to the brim. Due to usage and costs i've been running it on supermarket diesel and generally filling up from empty (fuel light on less than 50 miles) to half a tank.  I used to run on BP and BP Ultimate. After zeroing the MPG and using for a week with £15 of BP ultimate it did read as getting 55 MPG so could be psychological.
  • Mercedes 220 diesel - Dual clutch transmission 31 May 2016 (Forum)
The Mercedes has a “Hold” position, which disengages the transmission by an additional short stab on the footbrake after stopping and allows the foot to be taken off the brake pedal with the engine running, rather like neutral position on a manual gearbox. However, if I hold the brake pedal down, the engine continues to run and the car is stationary. As the transmission is mechanical, without oil to shear ( as in conventional automatic transmissions), what is slipping?
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.7CDTi - Noisey engine when started warm. 13 May 2016 (Forum)
My Vauxhall Corsa 1.7CDTi (2008 model) starts and runs perfectly when cold. However if the engine is anywhere between mildly warm and normal operating temperature and is stopped and restarted within a minute or two the engine sounds horrendous. This is so bad I immediately shut the engine down.

  • Honda CRV i-Vtec 2002 - Cold starting and judder 10 Sep 2015 (Forum)
My 13 year-old Honda CRV (petrol), 67,000 miles, owned from new, has become less easy to start in the cold weather and runs 'rich' when it starts; it is difficult to achieve a smooth clutch release until the engine has warmed-up (after a minute or two). Once warm, it runs perfectly. This fault has gradually become more apparent over the past 3 or 4 years.
