  used to produced warmed-up ancient Vauxhalls but is there any other manufacturer offering the same today? We?re not bothered about badge status, colour or origin ? we?re just after a car with all the complexity of a knife and fork. Someone has pointed me in the direction of a Rover 214 ? but all ideas and suggestions are awaited with interest. Our previously loyal old cars are now dead and dying ?.

  I have been quoted £47 for 14 days for my old car (as an additional car on the new car policy) or £90 for month. This seems extortionate when you consider the old car policy is £356 for the year!   I see one of the car supermarkets is selling un-registered, but old model 5-series BMW's at a considerable discount to the current model. Does anyone have any information on these cars. I understand that they are the result of over-production.

  Loads of realy shiny fairly new motors in a comfy indoor arena but the prices seemed to be ridiculously high! A year old megane 1.6 cabriolet £18000, 2 year old megane cc for £16000, 3 year old mx5 at £13000 without alloys, and the car I had with me was only worth £800 in px, although I was offered £2000 straight cash for it earlier that day even without buying a new car!

  Digressing a bit from my thread on the vandalism to Sarah Howards 17 year old Fiat Panda made me think. She obviously loved her little old car. I'm full of admriation for her in bucking the trend. My point is driving a classic or old car in the United States seems to be the cool thing to do.

  All things being well, we'll have a new addition to the family in January of next year, to vie for space with an 8 year old and a 2 year old. The 8 year old is on the cusp of being tall enough to do without his booster seat shortly, the 2 year old has an all-singing car seat. Come January, then, I'm anticipating the purchased car needing to host, in some combination from left to right, two car seats and a fidgety 8 year old too (who will no doubt crave a position next to the window rather than sandwiched between his siblings.

  What's your opinion on this question? I do 25k/year and on average keep a car for 4 years. I've tended to look for cars with low mileages for their age (my last purchase was 20 months old with 7k on the clock.) This is done on the basis that depreciation kicks in regardless of mileage and I'll rack the miles up anyway.

  I prefer old cars to new ones because they tend to have more character, and they're a lot easier and cheaper to repair, and more robust. Also I don't think that new cars today actually run any better than new cars did 20 years ago....

  Reading through PoloGirl's thread earlier, there was a little bit of banter over Polo's gender (the car, not the girl). To her, Polo is most definitely male. Now my 10 year old unmodified Escort i have always addressed as female. Not sure why, really. Perhaps it's a bit of personification (or doggyfication): Imagine Terry Wogan sitting by a fireplace in slippers calling his faithful old labrador (if he had one) "Good Old Girl".
