Un-registered old model 5-series BMW - Steely
I see one of the car supermarkets is selling un-registered, but old model 5-series BMW's at a considerable discount to the current model. Does anyone have any information on these cars. I understand that they are the result of over-production. If so, have they been standing in a field for five years. Also would the road tax be based on the actual model and year of manufacture or be the same as a new model.

Road tax would certainly be based on the current system ( in force since Y reg in Mar '01).
If 5 years old Brakes discs would need to be replaced, the fluid changed and the coolant at the very least.

Or do I recall that the old shape is still made in S.Africa - could they be newly imported from there ?

The old model e39 was phased out in 2003/4 and replaced by the e60.

I have not seen any unregistered e39 models on sale, but I have seen the new unregistered 5 series e60 models in the SE trim with about £10,000 of extras being offered for around £26k - £29k when the equivalent spec at BMW dealers costs just under £40k.

If it is the car supermarket beginning with an M then they are not the old shape ones but are the current version. If you look at the spec they are very clearly listed as 2008 cars abnd certainly look current. I think there was a tiny face lift in Sept 2008 but barely a visible one.

Interesting that the spec on these is very high. There are some with the really highly expensive paint such as Orient Blue (over £1,000 if I remember correctly), as well as loads of other options such as the maple dash, sport steering wheel, optional alloys, etc.

They are all petrol though, but in the larger scheme of things they are pretty economical if driven lightly and, based on the saving against a new diesel version you can buy a hell of a lot of petrol with the difference. Looks like a bargain. My much more basic 520d Touring bought this year cost over £27,000 after a 10% discount so these prices look incredibly good value.

Did you mean Sept 2007?

Also, a national search on autotrader for 5 series, 525i, 2008, 0-1 years will bring up other dealers besides the "M" supermarket. Again, these are high spec models [some including comfort seats, adaptive lights, etc.] at very tempting prices!
