  • Logical diagnosis and guessing. 7 Jan 2002 (Forum)
The exchange between KB and Kev on the Jump Leads thread made me think of the several phone calls from a customer over the past few days. All I was saying on the jump lead thread was that the cheap leads are often so poor at passing current they will not enable the start, particularly of a larger or diesel engine.

  • F Reg Nissan Micra - Starting Problems 29 Nov 2002 (Forum)
It was fine yesterday also, but failed to start again this morning. The engine is turning over but it just won't fire up. Someone has told me to take the HT leads off dry the leads and the plugs and spray WD-40 on them, but someone else has told me that this would probably cure the problem in the short term but make it worse in the long term! Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it.
  • Cavalier 1.6L - no spark to HT lead 10 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The engine behaved perfectly all the time even when the cooling fan was cutting in on high temperatures in traffic jams. I called out the RAC and the patrolman checked that fuel, spark plugs, distributor cap, ignition leads, igniton coil are all OK. He thinks it is the "amplifier module" which sits under the ignition coil that is likely to be faulty. He did not have a matching spare but said I should get one from a authorised dealer and it would be "very expensive".

  • vw polo 1996 - Car got wet and won't start, can't locate fault vw 15 Dec 2011 (Forum)
The problem is with the ignition system, a spark is jumping from the coil to the nearest point it can find. HT lead is fine and a new distributor cap and rotor have been fitted. Also plugs and leads are reasonably new and look in good condition. Not sparking on the plugs. Also tried drying obvious electrical points and spraying with wd40....

  • Changing Peugeot 306 Spark Plugs 22 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I bought a set of Champion RC97CC plugs as recommended in the manual. When I got home I removed the leads form the old plugs but I can't see where the old plug is or how I can access it. When I remove the lead all I can see is a hard black piece of raised plastic with a piece of metal in the middle (part of the spark plug?).
  • Nissan Terran II 2.4l - HT Cables 27 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Garage said to much oil and changed start plugs.  Drove a further 200 miles and started misfiring again. Replaced ht leads but may be faulty as still misfiring. Guy in garage on holiday so young lad looked at it.  Not sure if he has put my ht cables back on in the wrong order.  So don't know what to do.  Any ideas what order the attatched to the rotar arm cover and if not the ht leads what it can be?

  • Mitsubishi Shogun (1999 - 2007) - 96 3.0 V6 petrol misfire problem 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Shogun with misfire warmer it gets worse it gets. timing checked compression tested new plugs and leads fitted to no effect. only thing not changed is the cat and with the misfire that has broken up inside. uses no water or oil no pressurising of system just misses and pops in exhaust at times more so when warmed up. it must be something simple that i am missing. has anyone any ideas before i have to take it to garage. willing to try anything i have run out of ideas timing out head gasket/valve plugs leads etc.
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 2002, 1.3 Duratec misfire 28 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Just had a call from little brother, their shared family runabout is misfiring. 80k on the clock He has changed plugs and leads also in desperation has replaced the coilpack. Still doing it at idle and when driving, although at times it runs OK. Pulling plug leads off, it "seems" worse with one pair than the other (hence the coilpack).
  • Mazda 626 Electrical Fire 5 Oct 2006 (Forum)
However it doesn't seem to explain why the car continues to run after you've turned off the ignition and removed the key. Not a rough idle like run on. Actually continues to purr away. If you remove a battery lead, it stops and once the lead is replaced, it runs okay again. Anyone aware of ignition wiring that runs through the ABS loom?
  • What's a coil pack for Scenic? 3 Apr 2005 (Forum)
He said it was a 1 hour job to change, but my question is this: Can a half skilled DIY mechanic do it, as I am loathed to give dealers money for simple fit and replace jobs? Does anyone know or have they changed a coil pack before? I was told that they replaced HT leads...was there anything wrong with having HT leads in the first place? They always seemed reliable to me on previous cars.
  • Polo 89 1L awful starter 4 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Sometimes i have to put the foot to the floor to stop it from stalling. Ive replaced the distributor cap, HT leads and frequently apply loads of wd40 to both, this helps a bit with the idleing to start with but does not stop the stalling. I have not replaced the spark plugs but they dont look that old. There is an eletrical discharge in one of the leads im not sure if this is of any use it does not seem to fit properly.
  • rover 820 p reg starting probs 1 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have a Rover 820 ('97) P reg, bought it last Nov generally dead straight motor with service history , with 76K now 80K But twice this winter I have had problems starting it, both times the symptoms are similar ; it is reluctant to fire , it seems to fire once then doesnt seem to try, if you keep turning it over it might just catch , but runs lumpy till its warm, then its fine. I put a strobe on it and it seemed to be ok on the HT. It only has 4 HT leads and a potted in coil with all the 4 plug leads coming from that and no dizzy as such if thats of any relevance. help please
