Understated, versatile, practical and value for money

What makes this a good car for me? It isn't an X5, Q7, Disco, Range Rover or any of the other usual suspects in the 4x4 market. The Touareg is a nice place to be on a long or short drive and every bit as sophisticated as the badge brands in the sector. So it hasn't got 7 seats? Well I don't want to be a taxi for friends or family who can't fit their entourage in 5 seats. Buy a people carrier or a mini bus if you want to carry more than 5.

The Touareg is one of the few 4x4 vehicles capable of tackling the off road and is loaded with equipment as standard. The R Line models have an even greater array of kit as standard. A similarly spec'd model from BMW, Mercedes or Audi would see an extra £10,000 or more coming out of your pocket and i dread to think what the extra would be to spec a Range Rover to the same standard.

The 245bhp R Line with 550nm of torque has stacks of punch capable of surprising many a hot hatch. The 3.0 V6 engine is shared with sister models from Porche and Audi coupled with an 8 speed box that can be operated as a standard auto, tiptronic or via the flappy paddles. Fuel economy is what you'd expect from a big 4x4 and no worse than the opposition.

I've previously owned luxury executives and the Touareg is every bit as good. When I get drivers doing a double take at the car, it's clear it turns heads. You don't get that with an X5.
