I had a 56 plate grand vitara. Lovely looking car and had served me well for a few years but it had target on its back. It was getting on a bit, transfer case had an intermittent warning light and my off road excursions and not using low range had hurt my clutch. I wanted a bargain, 4wd Japanese car that was cheaper to run. Enter the Sx4!

What a car it's been in my 2 years of ownership. Its got the room for 2 kids with wide doors and high roof. Putting kids in car seats a breeze. An adult in the back as well is snug but my partner has been in between the kids and she didn't complain. She sure complained when in the back of her dad's corolla with 2 kids.

Boot manages fine. It's gobbled up 100 quid family shops with a pram also in the back. Yes, u need to buy a reasonable sized pram rather than some stupid thing. I never had a problem with boot. The roof rails are good quality. Bought some 35 quid crossbars and a 40 quid roof bag and that sorted our holidays to the caravan. Much prefer roof bag to box.

The 2L diesel is a belt run thing which the dealer lied about saying it was chain. He drove an audi so I'll just assume he knows nothing about cars. So, I got belt and pump done at 400 quid. Hurt me, but the 2l unit is a beauty. Is just a delight to drive. 53mpg on my trip to Boston and back. 37 around town and I don't drive economically.

I flirt with the idea of a jeep patriot (unreliable water pumps, seals, turbo hoses junk) or a diesel GV (more expensive, less fun), but I'd be an i**** to get rid. I've had a starter motor replaced. Fair enough, but car bumped and drive.

Also, had snow and ice. My road untouched snow. I have 4 all season menervas and not a wheel spin. 4wd lock seem to make the steering less light which I liked on icy roads.

It may not be the coolest looker but its a bargain 4wd car
