Exceptionaly good distance cruiser with astonishingly good MPG.

We have had this car for over three years now. Previous to this car we had the w211estate 350d and then a w212 estate 350d. We originally wanted another 350d as we really liked the easy cruising and quiet 6 cylinder engine as opposed to the old Mercedes 4 cylinder diesels that we always thought were noisy and unrefined. Our Mercedes dealer asked us to consider the new 220d as he felt it was a big improvement over the old model with the new engine coupled with the 9 speed box we would not miss the power of the 350d. Plus of course a big benefit in economy. He was right, the car has more than enough power and is quiet, particularly on motorways. The interior is excellent with the two wide screens easy to see and you can set them to different instrument clusters The leather seats are very comfortable with lots of adjustment. The premium plus package includes Lane Assist, Speed Sign Recognition and Variable Cruise Control. This really does help make distance driving relaxing and are aids I would not now want to be without. The Intelligent LED headlamps work very well as does the Parking Assist. We had the car come with Air Body Control (was called air suspension on the W212) and it again helps with comfort on long drives.The running costs are quite low with Car Tax of £30, insurance for myself and wife is about £250 and overall efficiency over the 48000 miles we have ran with the car is just over 52mpg. On a long run from Cheshire to London or up to Newcastle upon Tyne we get above 60 mpg if you set the Variable Speed Control to 70mph and put the car in ECO mode. We have had one issue with the car and that was a stuck valve on the controller for the Airbody Control. It didn't immobilise the car but the suspension was stuck on the raised level and was sorted in a day by replacing the controller under warranty with Mercedes. We had one recall notice regarding the rear spoiler on the boot lid that was dealt with by Mercedes in an hour through an inspection to check that the fixing bolts were correctly fitted - they were apparently. My only gripe is that when the car is 3 years old the connected packages need to be renewed so you loose the live traffic on sat nav, the remote vehicle status and location services on the Mercedes Me App. It was over £500 to renew the facilities we used regularly for a 3 year period. We haven't renewed as yet as we just use google maps through Apple Car Play.
