Ford Ka (2008 - 2016)
1.2 Edge
Good little car but with flaws
I bought this car for a low price because it was suffering from the very common gearbox input shaft bearing failure. It is a 2010 model and was almost 16 years old at the time but had covered only 40,000 mi from new. I repaired the gearbox myself with a roller type bearing, changed the timing belt and have been using it as a second car since. To drive it is okay, the seating position isn't particularly comfortable for a 6 footer like myself, and whilst performance is adequate around town it does struggle a bit at higher speeds. It is also rather noisy and buzzy on the motorway which makes it tiring Handling is good, although you can easily find the limits of grip with the narrow tyres. Fuel consumption is good, but not as good as some other small cars, I average about 45mpg in mixed driving although it will just about do 50mpg on a steady run at 55mph. Reliability has been good, no faults at all although I find the standard aircon poor and really affects performance when it is ok. So in summary a good little car, not a great one but could be idea if you get one at a good price.
