Overall reliability

Great all-round car, lovely drive and very practical.

I inherited this car from my late grandmother. At that stage it had 6000 miles on the clock and was 3 years old. The drive and ride quality are lovely, driving position are good, and driven carefully the car can be quite economical. On a country commute to work of about 20 miles I average just over 40 MPG, although I suspect I get closer to 32 or 34 MPG on the rare occasions when I take it on the motorway. The brakes are sharp and the steering feels just right. The gearbox is crisp and the ratios are good. The only annoyances are that some of the pillars are a little restrictive in terms of the view, and there is an annoying half-second or so lag between moving the throttle pedal and the engine responding. It's something one gets used to very quickly but it did result in some embarrassing stalls when I first got the car. I understand my grandmother was the same. The car is comfortable and the interior well thought out with lots of cubby-holes for storing bits and bobs. Tax is higher than I would like (isn't it always?) but insurance has been reasonable considering it's a fair-sized engine and I'm only 21 and male.
Maintenance and repairs have been OK. Mine has low-profile tyres which are a little expensive if you get decent quality ones but beyond that maintenance has been just the normal consumables - tyres and wiper blades. Reliability has been perfect and service costs are in line with anything else I would imagine. My family has a long history of owning Fords and don't really have anything bad to say about them - they have all been very reliable and completely up to the tasks for which they are designed. I would not hesitate to get another.
