Overall reliability

Good looking, good value, practical "warm" hatch.

The car is well equipped and easy to drive. Steering is light and precise if a little lacking in feel. Gearchange a bit notchy, especially the change to 2nd, but again light. Ride is perhaps a little too firm on low profile tyres, though the handling is sharp and precise enough for me without undue body roll on corners. Diesel engine is punchy and refined though not as economical as it should be - the newer 1.6 is better in this regard. No mechanical or electrical reliability issues in almost 40,000 miles (except for the CD player being intermittently unreliable - I've heard that this is a common fault) and interior trim good as new. No complaints either about panel fit or paint finish. No external release button on hatch which is a little tiresome, always having to open it with the remote or the button on the dash. Not keen on speed-related intermittent wiper delay, I'd prefer to control this myself.
