A pleasant, versatile and reliable family car

I bought this car - one of the first examples of the current version - from our local BMW agent in late 2022/early 2023, after 3 years with a Tesla Model 3. I was concerned that the BMW would be a bit gutless after the Tesla, especially given its small 1.5 litre engine. While it’s no fireball, it is quick enough for everyday driving, especially in Sport mode. The X1, being my first SUV, has proved to be ideal for load lugging and can carry 5 adults in reasonable comfort, thanks to its ample head- and legroom in the back. After some 16000 miles, the one disappointing aspect is its fuel economy. Most of my driving is around the town, with an occasional 40 mile return trip thrown in, and according to the BMW app, I am averaging about 37 mpg (imperial gallons), which the app annoyingly says shows “room to improve”. Despite all that, the X1 has been completely reliable with just a couple of recalls needing the dealer’s attention. One point to watch - when I bought the X1, it cost less than £40k, but I purchased the service pack at under £1000, which put the invoice price into the luxury car tax bracket. I am currently trying to find out if that is correct, but if the current price is still under £40k, I would advise any buyer to reject the service pack, pay as you go, and save yourself several hundred pounds a year after the first one.
