The previous message was typed in IE9.
At work I have no option to use anything other than IE9 and there are never any issues with websites other than Honest John.
At home I use IE8, Firefox, Seamonkey, Midori, Chrome, Opera and never have an issue on any of the compters or operating systems I use (XP, Win7, Mint, SliTaz, Puppy, Crunchbang) but use IE9 and there is a problem.
So rather than simply saying "change to firefox or Chrome" I would suggest that HJ gets the problems sorted since in my expereince the preoblem is only associated with this site.
Blaming IE9 is simply unfair when some people cannot change browsers.

Completely agree, it's rather poor in this age to be blaming the browser. Maybe I should dig out a copy of Netscape?!
Incidently, I've copied the url the page automatically tries to load up (which actually loads up blank);
Now I'm no programmer, but that looks as if it's repeating to me?!

Good news, I hope. Our guys have had a look at the issue and think they may have fixed it. If they haven't, please let me know at letters@honestjohn.co.uk (it's the quickest way).
HJ
No they haven't, just done the usual on me.

Explorer works perfectly in Germany in the UK its hopeless its the only web site that gives me problems.
|
I'm now getting posts displayed wider than before, with the result that the top ones disappear beneath the ads. (Using Opera - never had problems before.)

Let's see if this post works - I've come through IE9 instead of the usual Google Chrome.
Perhaps others would like to try accessing the site via IE9 to see if there's a difference.
(Edit - this posted easily enough but it too a while for the site to let me log in.)

I have just accesssed HJ using IE9, Opera and Google Chrome.
The posts in IE9, Opera and Google Chrome both go into the advertising column, and where adverts appear, the ads hide the wording in the post.
This occurs on both my Windows 7 laptop (new in November), and my Windows 7 desktop (new in June).
The site becoming unresponsive is as bad as ever.

Just tried this post on 4 laptops using WinXP, Win7, Mint and SliTaz. I have tried IE8, IE9, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Seamonkey, the result is exactly the same in every instance and just as Auristocrat says.
But it only affects this post, all the other posts are as normal.
Looks like the "improvements" only affect this post, fortunately.

After trying to restore HJ in IE9, now getting a message saying 'Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. The website continues to have a problem'.
|
As soon as I open the HJ Backroom on IE I get in the treacle quicker than before and then - stop. I think it is adsitis. I will revert to G Chrome.
|
There is something every wrong with the website.
On my Mac OS X 10.8, Safari 6, the HJ forum threads can scroll sideways for like a mile (11 page-widths in fact)
The right hand column is on top of the posts so one can't read them.
Your browsers probably can't render the page because the formatting is all out of bounds.

Hi - Constantly get the 'recover' message in IE9. Rarely in Chrome but still get the 'Ads over posts' problem at top of page.

Is there a release you can roll back to that is more stable and troubleshoot the latest version of the site out of the public eye in a test environment?
Perhaps you have a public facing test environment? Happy to try a few posts there if it helps. You could lock it down with a username and password and mail willing volunteers using the email addresses underlying our usernames.
Just an idea.

If I am in the UK and use network 3 internet I always have problems if I use T mobile no problems .

I always use the 3 network, via a mobile broadband dongle, whenever I'm away from home - without any issues - using Firefox and XP.

Well, clearly there isn't, Collos! Please be sure to let HJ know as he has requested.

I usually adopt the attitude that if there is the occasional website that gives me grief or, like a certain rather old one that requires me to have Java then I just don't bother to go there anymore. Life is too short to bother about such matters. Go elsewhere!
|
That's a perfectly reasonable line to take - although I'm glad you're still with us, Oldgit - but we'd prefer not to lose people; which is why I join HJ in urging anyone who has a problem accessing or posting to let him know at

I have switched pop up blocker off and guess what? My first post in months and the site works fine.
Cheers HJ.
|
Just done the same - and it seems to work
|
To add to this thread IE8 locks up within seconds of opening the site. Firefox works fine. I blame the programmers!
|
Chrome OK
IE8 just tested on a thread: no lock up.
XP Pro plus Norton Internet Security plus PC Utilities: no problems at all...
I think most of the complaints may be systems with poor security software.
|
Further to my earlier post re turning off the pop-up blocker, the next day the site was behaving as badly as ever. Sometimes it is fine, other times it needs recovering virtually every page (sometime I get a message stating IE is unable to continue recovering the site).
This is on two computers:
1) a Samsung laptop bought in November - running Windows 7 64 bit and Microsoft Security Essentials (scored higher than Norton in the most recent Which? test on internet security suites).
2) an Acer desktop bought new in late June 2012 - running Windows 7 64 bit and the free trial of McAfee internet security.
The security software isn't to blame.
|
Why waste time with this? I'm on a two year old Acer laptop with Avira anti virus and have no problems. Also I.E.8
I have just bought a new Acer laptop with that wretched I.E.9 installed and also Avira's anti viurus but this laptop does give trouble with HJ's website from time to time but hey, no probs with c******* where I reside most of the time.
|
For those who are quite happy with IE8/9 and don't want to swap browsers just to view the HJ site, it is quite annoying. Especially when other sites don't have the same issues (eg. c*******, Toyota Owners Club, Hyundai Owners Club, ARon-line, etc).
Have e-mailed HJ directly.
The stock reply seems to be to use another browser or blame Microsoft for updating their programs, etc. However, as HJ is the only site I continually have problems with, perhaps the only effective answer is to stay away.

Likewise.
Monzilla/Windows7 /Aol 9.6/AVG (paid) on a two month old Del XPS 8500 (not cheap)
Go to home page and PC locks.
Control/Alt/Delete to get prormamme to end and if lucky all OK but if not restart.
Not an odd occasions but virtually every time I visit the site and then if I am lucky my submissions accepted. Not always.
HJ this site not firing on all cylinders and hasn't been for some time - new engine required............

Logged on this morning and very quickly the cursor arrow turns into the hour glass and the site is locked. After closing down and restarting it is now working again. This is similar to how it has worked for the past week or so. I use IE8 and very rarely does this happen on other sites so can only imagine that the problem is nothing to do with my computer.
I was one of the first to use HJs site many years ago albeit under another name. It never used to give any problems. At that time there were many more posts than at present and it just may be connected to this problem.

HJ,
NO. I have the motoring discussion in my favourites and go directly to this. I mentioned the hour glass appearing. I should have said its the hand which appears when the site locks down. . Just in case that means anything......
