1997 Peugeot 406 TD - Central Locking Going? - jaded1

Can somebody please advise on the following.

My beloved and surprisingly reliable 406 is developing a problem with the central locking.

I always use the key as the remote fob had broke some time back. It's been ok up until now.

Now when I turn the key it takes anything between 3 and 10 seconds to lock/unlock the car whereas it would normally action pretty much at the turn of the key.

During the locking/unlocking I can hear either a fast clicking noise or a long winded drone before it open/locks especially around the rear doors. Very bizarre.

Anyway I've checked the footwells and the electrics panel behind the glove box for damp but it's fine.

I've read that changing the central locking unit may fix the issue? Any other ideas what the problem could be?

I can't afford to take it to the peugeot garage and pay their silly fees,

Sorry about that, I posted two replies and niether appeared. What I said was, try locking all the doors from inside as a sticky lock can cause that problem.

Thanks mate will give that a try that could be the case as the rear doors are never used!

For feedback and archive purposes. I used the car yesterday and bizarrely it worked fine. I think because it was a hot sunny day and it's been nothing but 6 weeks of rain here before so the damp must have been getting to something.

To be sure I have given the back doors a good locking and unlocking a few times.

In case this this starts happening again is there a way to turn the central locking off and just use the use key for the drivers door only?
