It goes like this:

Court
Ban - due to ban points not awared but need for Driving Licence to be endorsed with conviction by Court. For a short ban Licence returned direct after Court tells DVLA of endorsement. (Long bans Licence sent to DVLA). You did not surrender your Licence so as a naughty boy they revoked your Licence. The effect, until such time as you reinstate, is that you are driving without a Licence. The Good news is that your Insurance does not become void but there is need to tell them of your ban - read the policy small print..
The second bit of good news is that if you send your Licence with an application to renew (photos - form at Post office and fee) DVLA will issue a new Licence with points free but that endorsement thereupon. Voila - street legal.

PS. If you have a load of entitlements on your DL photocopy before sending so that you can ensure DVLA do not drop any.
