any - best value breakdown cover - injection doc

Hi Guys

which is the best value for money breakdown cover, currently with the AA and have been for 24 years but its getting very expensive ! over £218.00

We have 4 cars and 4 drivers in one family.

GEM appear to offer similar cover to my AA policy but for £118.00 anyone had experience good or bad ?

I do need cover that covers recovery of a caravan 8 mtrs in lenght ! ( only UK as I take seperate cover for abroad ) some only cover to 7m

I have only called AA out twice in 24 years but they dont offer any no claims discount !

I use First call, (Colchester) and pay £32 and a call out fee, or £42 no call out fee, you can do it online, but if you have 4 cars call them. I have been with them about 5 years and the once I needed them they were there in about half an hour. Thoroughly Recommended.

You can look up the landline number on saynoto0845 website.

happy motoring

We have used "boncaster" for the last few years.

Essentially, it's around £40 per year. Covers all cars and all drivers.

That is homestart, destination forwarding etc.

Essentially, if you need to claim (i.e. you breakdown) you call them and they send a local garage out to recover. You pay the local garage and claim back the call-out.

I will admit, not had to claim, but if it's a pre-requisite for employment, it fits the bill for not a lot.

We have been with GEM for years for both of our cars.

We have made 3 call outs and in all three occasions they reached us after about an hour.

I think GEM is a mutual society and not a for profit organisation (as AA and RAC used to be at one time).

You get a moderately interesting magazine every so often.

Another Boncaster Autoaid customer here - £38 a year and it's a personal insurance policy for me and my wife, rather than attached to a particular car.

The only downside is I've never had to use it, so can't feed back on how good they are.

We have been with Autoaid for a few years. My wife had to call them once & the garage was with her within the hour. She paid the bill with a credit card & we sent off the claim form with the receipt from the garage.

Autoaid re-imbursed us before the credit card bill arrived.

Great value for money.

Their blurb says they will recover any attached caravan but I would just check with them first.

Many thanks for imput.

Contacted above firms this morning and GEM cover was very good for family of 4. I rang AA to cancel and they matched GEM ! wasnt expected and TBH I must admit I wonder why I have been paying so much more for all these years !

So to date staying with AA ( better the devil you know ) but if the same thing happens next year I will be off to GEM. Very help full on the phone as well.

That's an interesting view on isurance daveyjp - are you similarly disappointed you've never had to claim for say, house subsidence? - just to check on how good the claims process is?

Those are the downsides in life I find I can generally put up with!

'Best value for money' can mean different things to different people. At renewal, whilst being mindful of the renewal cost, I would also want a service that is likely to get me mobile again quickly in the event of a breakdown.

In the September 2011 edition of Which?, they reported on both third party breakdown cover (AA, RAC, etc) and car maker branded cover (Handacare Assistance, Club Toyota, etc). The percentage scores given, were based on waiting time (based on the time it took for breakdown services to arrive at a scene of a breakdown), the percentage of cars fixed at the roadside, and the customer rating (based on overall customer satisfaction and whether they would recommend the provider to a friend). The average waiting time was 47 minutes, and the average for cars being fixed at the roadside was 61%.

The findings were based on feedback from 52,563 Which Car? survey respondants. 15% of these had called out a breakdown service in the previous year. 7,366 drivers were asked to rate the service delivered by their breakdown service provider.

The scores were: AA 70%; RAC 69%; Brittania, GEM Motoring Assist and Saga 65%; Autonational 62%; Europ Assistance 59%; Green Flag 53%; Auto Aid 51%; More Than 38%.

I get it free with the Natwest Gold Advantage bank account. It is £16 a month, but covers two iPhones (if joint account, but still £16), annual travel, lots of other stuff and green flag. You can also get aa/RAC from time to time for about £20 if you find a friend to refer you and they get M&S vouchers or such like.

I am an autoaid customer, have used them several times for callout and they have been excellent. You do need to pay up front for the service, they then re-imburse you. No problems at all.

I am covered for any car I drive. So is my wife. I have used AA, Green Flag etc. in the past.

They were recommended by Moneysavingexpert, who still give it their"best buy" rating:

Definitely find some comparable prices (the AA are currently offering 40% off for new customers on-line) and then phone them and ask them to match it. With your 'record' they will most likely match the price.
