Mitsubishi Grandis - Engine starts then stops - petersu

I have the following problem with my 55reg (2006 model) Mitsubishi Grandis 2.0 diesel (VW engine):
It starts fine in the mornings. When I drive it a little, then stop and try to start again after a few minutes the engine starts but then stops again straight away. After up to 10 attempts it starts fine. Sometimes it helps to lock/unlock the car. No warning lights on the dahboard.

It could be as simple as it drawing a load of air into the fuel lines, possibly made worse by a blocked fuel filter. I'd certainly change as a first step it if it hasn't been done for a while.
