Focus Mk1 Ghia 1999 (T) - insurance Write-off and best offer? - frankbutcher

hello all,

My wife crashed into someone a few weeks back and damaged the bonnet, grille and front bumper of our car. The car is deemed a write-off, and as our excess was £300, i have been offered £700 by the insurance company - it's the £1000 that i said the car was worth when i renewed the insurance less the excess. i said it was worth £1000 as i didn't really have a clue what it was worth and guessed.. doh..

i can't seem to find a similar car for less than £1700, (autotrader and Glass' price), so i am suggesting that i would like at least £1200 from the insurers. am i being reasonable, or don't i have a leg to stand on as i should have valued it for more when i renewed the insurance?

any thoughts would be much appreciated - cheers!

i can find loads of Mk1 1999 focii around the £1k to £1.2k mark.

The real point is that your premium was based on the value you gave for the car on the proposal.

So does it pay to state a very high price for the value of your car? then have the insurers offer you a much lower value anyway -as they're only interested in returning you to the value of the car you had - not the value you claimed it was? i'd have thought the value you said it's worth is immaterial - it's only worth what the market dictates - not what you think?

what do you reckon?
