Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
Some people may be aware of my last break in only two months ago, well the same thing has just happened, this time they smashed a window and broken my seat belt housing (luckily its just cosmetic, it just needs new plastic).

Waiting for the police to turn up some time never.

Again mine was the only car in the street that was targeted, and the police think somebody has seen me with all the computers and that is why my car has become a target.

This time I made the mistake of locking my car and its going to cost me £75 via the insurance to get a new glass window put in.

It certainly raises a valid point people made in the other thread about me buying a brand new car, if this sort of thing is going to keep happening I may be better just fixing the Corsa.

Nothing was taken but it is a mess :(

I am not even sure if they are coming to finger print or what so going to phone them again if not I need to phone Autoglass for them to come and sort it.

Maybe hold off getting a new car then and look at premises for the business first.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I think the new car idea is out the window now, so much is going on, we probably moving anyway at some point. I have realised that cars are expensive now and if my Corsa does need a lot of work I have use of my dads car so I will just buy it off him for about £300.

Just phoned the police and they are sending people round. I actually got very angery with the civilian on the phone who had the attitude of so what, then a copper rang me up and he seemed concerned.

More than the £75 its mess my day completly up :(

Sorry to hear that Rattle. Why on Earth did they break the seatbelt buckle?

I guess in future it might help to leave the glovebox empty and open and the boot clear and no parcel shelf in?
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - rtj70
The OilBurner's suggestion is a good one.

Lucky there was nothing worth taking in there like someone's computer you were fixing.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I would never ever leave a computer in there, but what is now worrying me is the thieves no the reg number they may target me while I am driving with a computer in it.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
Thats a good idea :).

The seatbelt buckelt I just don't get but there is mud on the seats so am guessing they tried to climb in the back but my car has deadlocks so the only way in is to climb through a broken window.

I may put a sticker on it saying no contents of value and then put a CCTV dummy up.

The car damage is just a fraction of the cost of the hassle and stress of phone calls etc and now the worry of security. Apparantly car crime in my area is quite low at the moment too so the police are not bothering with it.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - smokie
Adds insult to injury when they leave their old garbage in such a mess on your seat too :-)

More sensibly, sorry to read this Rattle.. As above, I'd say you need to make sure that the scroats have no illusion that there is anything worth nicking.

Hard luck Rattolo. It's horrible having your property vandalised by toerags. I am sure many here will sympathise from experience, as I do.

The sort of people who do things like that have a mean side. It occurs to me that your car may stand out because it is clean and you don't use it much. Let it get a bit shabbier looking and use it more, and they may lose interest.

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
Until recently had been used every day but I stopped using it last week until I get the the head gasket check done on Thursday (might have to cancel that now) so have been using my dads car.

There is much newer cars on my street that don't get touched so it dosn't make a lot of sense. It is just a good job the seatbelt mechanism is not damaged as that would make the car a right off as it would need a completly new seat.

You'd have thought they'd have been polite enough to nick your CD too.

They took the sat nave last time so may have been looking for its replacement in case Rattle had left it in the car again.

If they had broken the seatbelt mechanism, then the insurance payout for the car would probably be less than it is worth to you.

Could you cope with a van with no side windows and no sign writing on this may be more secure?

Rattle: remind the Police of their pledge:

www.direct.gov.uk/en/CrimeJusticeAndTheLaw/ThePoli...5
"Through the national policing pledge, every police force promises to listen to you and your neighbours, and to act on any problems you raise with them.
The pledge promises that:
- police will treat you with dignity and respect at all times
- neighbourhood policing teams will spend at least 80 per cent of their time on the beat in your neighbourhood "

But then remember the Manchester Police also say:

"Don't be a tool - keep your valuables out of sight"

Bad luck Rattle, unfortunately this kind of stuff happens all too often. I hope that one day the low lifes who do this sort of thing get their come uppence.

You do seem to have more than your fair share of bad luck.

Leaving stuff in the car (sat nav taken first time) is not what I call bad luck. Last time they did not nick some other stuff which was in the car:
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=81358&...e

;-) Insurance company might think this was an attempt to write off a car that has an impending expensive repair to a duff engine.

In addition to Oil Burner's advice, I'd also fold the back seats down if I were you so that it's absolutely clear there's nothing in the car, even when it's dark.

The seatbelt buckle may be expensive /awkward.
It looks like it has pyrotechnic pretensioner, and the yellow flag is behind the red plastic. Even if you get a used part, it can be complicated to fit as you need to disconnect the battery and use a special fork.

I think more in the sense of it will be a forking difficult & awkward job to do.

( Mods - feel free to slap me down if that's naughty)

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I think the seatbelt is fine it works it is just the plastic clippings that have snapped off, I will know more tomorrow. Autoglass are coming out tonight to replace the glass.

I don't think the seatbelt pretensioner has activated as the yellow flag would be higher than the buckle but I will know more tomorrow.

I need to get the glass fixed anyway regardless I have had about 6 people knocking on the door this afternoon asking if its my car.

I will know more tomorrow, either way cliaming on the insurance for the seatbelt is not an option. If I have to I will end up stripping the car down to a million pieces and sell it that way.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
Edit the police have been good a proper cop phoned me up later and sent a fingerprint person round :).

As for the seatbelt the airbag light is not on and it clips in perfectly fine so I think its nothing more than just the outer casing.

Edit there was nothing on show and the car was deadlocked, I did everything by the book this time. This have now taken up an entire day and I now need to spent the entire night waiting for the windscreen people.

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - bell boy
my take on the situation
most of it already covered of course
you might have replaced the sat nav and thats what they thought
its been parked up a week so they assumed you werent coming back to it any minute
the plastic does indeed clip on and is replaceable and your seatbelt pretensioner and airbag are quite safe as these work on a firework type device to trigger the pretensioner and are replaceable but needs the seat out to do it and the pin in the firework before you do do it ,so you can just replace the plastic from one at the scrappies and maybe tape it together as they come in two halves
i do believe too this was broke by the youth that had to climb into the back
by the way if they had wanted a computer they would have broke the back window so as said leave glove box open in future or even consider removing the lid
only way to stop this petty larceny is to move im afraid
pecker up it happens to us all, certainly ive had more than my share of crime done on me over the years
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Sizer
Rather than pay autoglass £75 notes could you not get a second hand window from a scrappy, they are not hard to fit at all and would probably save you a good £50.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Dynamic Dave
As for the seatbelt the airbag light is not on

Your belt tensioner is mechanical, so won't put the airbag light on in the event of a fault. That is the purpose of the yellow flag, it pops up out of the side of the seat belt holder to indicate that it's been triggered.

I'm pretty sure on a Corsa-B of this age they're mechanically operated, not electrically operated. There is a big spring under the seat that is connected to the rail mechanism that triggers in an impact when sudden decelleration is detected. You are right however that a locking device has to be fitted (which is called a fork) to the spring before removal from the seat assembly. At one time Vauxhall put them just behind the door cards, but customers started complaining of a rattle (no, not the OP) in the door, which turned out to be the plastic locking device.

EDIT - just seen bell boys reply, which basically says the same as my post

Rattle - I have to say, from what I can see of your car (current theft damage aside) it looks in really good condition inside and out and with only a head gasket to fix I can't believe you were ever thinking of scrapping it!!
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - bathtub tom
Rattle.

I understand a car will be broken into if they can see two quids worth of stuff.

I can see a CD (more in the glovebox?). A charger (satnav in the glovebox?). Thinking like a car thief, then it's probably 'worth a go'.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - SpamCan61 {P}
I don't think HGF has been officially confirmed yet either: as mentioned surely a window or complete door from a scrappy would be cheaper and quicker than Autoglass.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
It is time I have wasted four hours on phone calls as it is, the last thing I wanted to do is faff about tomorrow in scrap yards when I have jobs all day. I pay the experts to fit a window glass, the people may me.

It dosn't affect my no claims bonus so this is just the less hassle free, there also isn't many proper scrap yards near me any more, they are all those stupid health and safety ones that charge 3 times as much.

If the head gasket is ok and its just a timing issue and condensation I am going to get my Corsa to through the MOT and wait for the car market to settle down, if it is the head gasket then I may keep the car off road until I decide what to do.

I completly agree its a damn shame to scrap it, been thinking about that a lot in the last few days when its clean it looks almost like a new car. If it is the head gasket it is a £600 job as it will need a new timing chain (its worn anyway).

If I do keep it I get an alarm fitted.

I am getting a compression test and a sniff test done on Thursday so I will know my final decision then.

Not read all of this - but removing the rear parcel shelf as well is good idea. Be a minimalist in your car not even empty Coke bottle as an untidy car is an ideal place to look for dropped tenners or coins under the seats etc...tidy mind etc...

Laptops easily fetch £100 in pubs there is a big market for them. Desktops are worth less but also they want them for the data.

They may also assume I carry parts but I don't I buy all the parts when I need them and don't keep anything in stock really because the value of computer parts mostly falls.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - pete&hisgolf
Touch wood, I've not (yet?) had my car broken into since I started doing the following:

- leaving the rear parcel shelf at home
- leaving the glove box open
- leaving the centre console cubby hole lid open
- leaving the ashtray open (some people keep loose change in there)
- putting the disklok on
- removing everything of any value from the car.

I don't think the disklok makes any real difference because I don't think thieves would get past the immobiliser (and it's an 11 year old car so the more hi-tech villains wouldn't be interested) but I think/hope the interior gives off a slightly paranoid message that says "I have removed absolutely everything worth nicking from this vehicle."
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - BobbyG
Well I have not done any of Petes recommendations and not had a car broken into since My mk2 Escort in 1988.

Think there is no second guessing of crooks, sometimes its just your bad luck.

Take it you have nowhere else to park other than on the street?

I have a lock up down the road but its full of furniture at the moment but I intend to carry on using it later for a car project of some sort. I don't think I will be living close enough to it to use it for car storage though.

Until the last couple of months we have not any issue with car crime for about 8 years.

Thanks in future I am going to leave my car completly empty and I am going to buy a big camp style rucksack and put computers in that so people cannot see me carrying the laptop bags.

I don't think I need that kit as the seat belt works perfectly the plastic outshell has just snapped when the gits climbed into the back.

Autoglass are here now chap seems very pleasent well until I told him it had electric windows!

Rattle, Hope im wrong here but i hope it's not somebody who reads this site who recognise the photo's you put up of where you live and know what you carry a bit less information now and again may help you.!

Like i say i hope im wrong but be carefull who you trust old mate there's far too many scumbags out there.!
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I put the pics up to stop any accusations of trolling by a certain member but it did come to my mind too. The pics are rather generic though.

My car is all fixed up now and they even hoovered it all out for me. It took him 50 minutes to do the job in total, the electric window is a little bit squeeky now though.

The seat belt buckle will probably fail the MOT as it is, but its just two bits of plastic that clip together as far as I can tell, the actual assembly seems to be working perfectly. Actually I am just going to test it now.

I think I just need to go to scrappy and get a cheap part.

I may still be scrapping the car anyway under the scrappage I am not sure yet.

Just come on and seen your tale of woe, Rabble.
It does seem you have some bad luck recently, I hope it changes soon.
I have seen where you park, naturally you want to park outside the house, but it is tucked away round the corner. Would parking round the corner on O. Road, where there is more passing activity make sense ?

BTW...When I saw the picture of your passenger seat, I thought you'd been round here with your camera. Mine looks like that all the time, apart from the glass !

Ted
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I should have moved it actually. I normally don't park there but the last time I used it the I dropped my grandma off and the engine didn't sound that well so I was a little annoyed with it. I then lost my space and had no choice but to park there. It it is usualy outside my house with my dads.

I will not be parking there ever again anyway.

Taking it to Andy's (is it Andy or Ian get the two mixed up) on Thursday so he can check out my head gasket. I am sure he will advise on the seat belt issue too.

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - daiking
A couple of points that may or not be helpful.

My previous car (S-reg Ibiza) got broken into twice in a few months in Manchester in 2005. Once in the city centre (round the corner from Lime, all designated parking) and once at home in Hulme. Seems that the rear speakers (nothing special) were to blame. They came out and I got an alarm installed - no more problems in the following year I had the car.

I think there is also the assumption that older cars are easier to break into, I wouldn't have thought the corsa had deadlocks. Whilst I wouldn't use it as an excuse to get a new car, I personally think a new car is less of a target in some respects. But that still didn't stop friends having their cars (Auris and 1-series) broken into in residential car parks off Palatine Rd, Didsbury. Sometimes it doesn't matter where you live, it'll still happen.

As for Autoglass, I got one fixed by them for the excess (£50 at the time) the second I paid the full price myself (about £130 iirc). Why? Well, my insurance policy would only happily pay out for 2 glass claims in a year. I was doing a lot of M-way miles at the time and didn't want to risk having to pay for a windcreen out of my own pocket. So maybe worth checking about any claim limits for glass in your policy.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
I think its two but will double check.

I know that part of Didsbury all too well :(

My car does actually have deadlocks, but it seems it may have actually caused more damage as they had to climb into the car rather than get in through the door. My car cost over £9k in 1999 so it is actually very well equiped for its age.

The police said I might find some blood when I clean it all out properly and if I do to contact them.

I don't think it will affect my insurance too much because I didn't claim last time (I just informed them about it). I have a mate who lives in Salford and he looses a car each year as they just get vandalised I mean properly vandalised, at least all I have is a bit of broken plastic and £75 out of pocket.
Car been broken into again - pics of damage - oilrag

Other more in the know than I will probably confirm or deny this, but I suspect that the people who did it were probably the same lot, they got something last time, could see bits throught the window and decided it was worth a second go... When I lived in Edinburgh I got done twice in quick succession and thats what the Police said then...

You could fit an alarm, but if its just a quick "smash and dash" they'd be gone by the time you get there... best bet, as everyone else has said, is to make the car as empty as possible...

Rent a garage perhaps?

Edited by b308 on 17/02/2010 at 08:19

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
There isn't any garages close enough, and if I have to walk five minutes down the road to get to the car then faff about with opening it and it won't save any time and the car will be pointless.

I am simply just going to leave the glove box open from now as suggested.

Car been broken into again - pics of damage - Rattle
It runs pefectly, just been out in it, just lots of smoke and dripping with water. It COULD be condensation but new mayo has appeared after just two miles so head gasket is most likely cause. There is nothing wrong with it other than a bit of wear and tear. Tracking is all it should need for the MOT if the head gasket is fine.

It is just a breath of fresh air to drive compared to my dads Fiesta, it has excellent visibility, good brakes, very light steering (nice for the city) very good clutch (no signs of any wear) and everything works.

If tomorrows test confirms it is the head gasket then I will get shut, either way I could not have left it parked outside my house with a broken window.
