Legal cover on car policies - Man without a plan
Hi Back Roomers,

I was just wondering whether everyone bothers with legal cover on their insurance policies or not?

Every year it seems to go up another £5 odd (now £25 on the policy I have just purchased) and it seems I have it on 2 car policies (1 in my name and 1 in the wife's), legal cover on the home insurance policy etc etc.

So is it worth having guys?

Thanks

Do you feel lucky?!

If you don't think you'll ever need it don't buy it.

Just remember a solicitor instructed by you following an accident will charge £25 for a short phonecall.

If you have way of joining CSMA www.csmaclub.co.uk/join/join-eligibility.php membership is £15 and includes legal cover.

My sister has twice been the innocent party in serious accidents. On both occasions she has had to take the other drivers to court and won. The last case, her legal fees were £8000. The £23 legal cover I pay is IMHO money well spent.

Just renewed the car insurance 10 mins ago - declined legal car cover @ £25 - the comp car insurance was £138 so in percentage terms it was significant.

Legal cover - 2 x car + 1 x house = £75+ - not such a good deal in my opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts so far guys...

Incidentally when I just took out the policy with Swift Cover, I must say they seem very, very good.

I did all the comparison sites first and they were cheapest so went through cashback and then took the policy.

The forms seemed to be a lot simpler and quicker to fill out, it was very easy to tailor with the add-ons I wanted (or didn't want) and at the end they get you to register so in future you can login to change the policy / add temporary drivers etc without an admin fee (which they listed as £30 for each change if done over the phone).

I was very impressed.

These are normally mutually exclusive when it comes to car insurance :-(

I've recently been calling round for bike insurance quotes.
As a result of merely getting a quote, one of them supplied free legal cover.
Reading the guff, it looks and sounds just like what you normally get.

I'm guessing claims arising from this free policy will end up with "no win no fee" lawyers and the free cover will be paid for by the large introductory commission they get.

I'll keep the phone number handy though.

If you have an accident then this policy gives you free access to:

A 24/7 freephone service to report your accident
A recovery service for you and your motorcycle
Repair of your motorcycle
Hire of a replacement motorcycle
Up to £50,000 of legal cover to cover the costs of seeking compensation from the party at fault
Just to confirm then, there is NO COST to you for this policy, and we hold no bank or credit card details of yours. This is a totally FREE policy given to you just for taking out a motorcycle insurance quote.

That just an accident management service. Little short of a con.

All they're interested in is pursuing claims where they are certain to win and can load on huge charges. Anything slightly iffy and they won't want to know.

When that drug dealer run into the Passat i had. He was driving under the influence & uninsured amongst many other things.

Gave wrong address etc. When i eventually tracked him down, i instructed the legal service part of the insurance to recover my excess. What a waste of time. Fruitless. I think the words they used was he was a man of straw. Its your choice to take legal cover and the chance with it of getting owt.

When needed.
