Hello its that man again,
After haveing not much luck with dealers off the cars that i liked i thought i would try a BMW garage that i just happened to drive past,
now what a difference i know the cars are more expensive but the service is pretty faultless oh and the kids loved the toys and the fact that they got treated well with drinks and sweets.
Now i think i might go for a second hand 3 series saloon but whats the difference as there is a 318 and 320 both with the same 2 littre engine.
now i know that you get a 140ish and a 170 ish power output or there abouts but the car i got an insurance quote on came up as 120 hp is that right as i thought they just came in the two outputs.
and again thanks in advance

Get a quote for the model you're interested in. There are (as you know) multiple power outputs for the same size of engine.

I used the car reg no to get the quote through a comparison site and it came up as 120hp but the dealer said that the 3 series came in two power outputs the 140 and the 170 he said that this car was a 318d and 140hp.
I wasnt sure as the comparison sites have got the power output wrong on cars before so i thought some off the informed backroomers would know.
Is there a way to find out from the car itself.

Well known dodgy dealer ploy - replace badges / tell punter with those from more powerful model and put £££s on the selling price.
My bet would be the Ins Co database is correct!

I wouldnt say that is true as the last passat i had was a 130 sport and the insurance company kept telling me is was a 110 even though i told the team leader that they stoped makeing the 110 the model before mine, in the end i had to swap insurance companys after many calls and letters ended up getting me nowhere.
As for the dodgy dealer i would have thought that was more down to the backstreet dealers not the main dealers but you never know.

Depends what years you're looking at- pre efficient dynamics 318d has 120 bhp and 320d 163bhp. After efficient dynamics they upped the power. Winter 2007 I *think* was the change over.

Ah ha the car in question is a late 2007 model so it must have been the last off the pre Ed cars,
so what are the differences between pre and after ED cars is it still the same engine, are they any good or would it be best to wait till a newer one was in stock.

Am I right in thinking that the lower output pre 57 (ish) plate 4 cylinder Diesels have a turned down exhaust and no DPF ?
Thereafter it's a decorative oval pipe on 4 cylinder cars both petrol and diesel with the 143 and 177 PS outputs for the diesels and DPFs.
I thought that Efficient Dynamics with stop/start but the same power outputs appeared in mid 2008 for the 2009MY.
