Trying to buy four 195. 60. 15V tyres and am considered if it was worth joining Costco and splash out on Michelins instead of Goodyears.
Rang for a quote today and they will not give a quote to non members. So chicken and egg. Not worth joining until I see the price, but have to join to see the price. Seems crazy.
Any solution possible?

I've found their Michelin prices are very similar to Micheldever tyres.

I reckon Costco is very competitive, and possibly unbeatable for Michelins. I recently priced 195/65x15V's @ about £60 if I recall correctly (a price that my pals at ATS could not get close to).
However Costco only do the Energy's (and no longer the Primacy's) in that size. So I defaulted to some Klebers - very slightly cheaper - at my local ATS.
Costco sometimes have added offers on - 4 for 3 etc, and also I have found that their pices for pukka Bosch batteries are very good too.

Is it possible to join Costco if you not a trader ?

Is it possible to join Costco if you not a trader ?

yes. Either by being employed by one of their nominated companies (schools, nhs, Royal Mail etc), or being in one of their nominated professions (eg. an accountant).

If neither apply, there is a way around it if you know someone who is a member - get them to add you as an additional card on their account, then when renewal time comes around you're entitled to get a an account in your own right.

My long term experience is that it is worth the joining fee (and annual subscription) to Costco for tyres. Particularly if you can pick a promotion week when the produce is reduced by 25%. To my surprise, I shod my last car - an Audi A6 Quattro - at all four corners with Michelins for £260.

And in the same visit you can get a Rolex, roast chicken, nappies, a paddling pool, yoghurt, an iPod, shoes, a big heavy toolkit and an eye test, to name only a few. Worth going for the eccentric stock lines alone.

Thanks. I tried them but at £68.61p they are miles behind Elite tyres at £58-69p for Goodyear NCT5s which I have had in the past and found to be OK and hardwearing. I still have a little time, but the Costco decision is still crazy. Can't see why if prices are so good, they don't encourage more to join. More must = greater sales.

Do have a look at www.valuetyres.co.uk - they do more than just value tyres.

MW I just phoned Costco as that is the same tyre I have been buying from them for the last 6 years. £64.61 all in, not in stock now but they will order in 3-5 days.

gsb,
How kind of you to bother. What tyre was that for? Michelin yes, but exactly which one? Do they still do Primacy tyres? Is there a choice

I asked for a price for 195. 60. 15V Primacy. Previously Costco (Watford my nearest) have said they can and will order in any Michelin tyre. They did for my Michelin Alpins.

Unless they've changed policy very recently I've never had any problem getting tyre price quotes from Costco at both the Manchester and Chester branches. I am a member but they've never asked for membership details before quoting.

Spot on Bill.
Chester quoted immediately in a friendly mannar. £69 31p all in for Michelin Energy Saver.
Said Primacy are finished now.

The self-employed can join CostCo.

Great prices for tyres, but after one experience I am going elsewhere for fitting.

Costo advertise that they fill the tyres with nitrogen now, not air, and make great claims about improved drivability as a result. It's not something I have any experience of.

Would it make much difference?

Said Primacy are finished now.

errr...no it's not. OK, it's been replaced...by Primacy HP. Energy Saver is a very different tyre - low rolling resistance and high treadwear rating.

Anyone know if Costcos promotion weeks are 'regular'. Anyone work there and know when the next one is?
Costco Tyres - Bill Payer
They send the offers out in a booklet which (I think) covers a season. Tyre offers have been (ish) late spring and early autumn.

However the last offer wasn't as good as in the past - proviously there was 20% off, but the last one was a variable discount depending on the size of tyre and how many you bought.

I would say that they do seem to have dropped the prices anyway - I got Michelin Energy tyres for our Jazz recently for under £40 when they'd previously quoted £50. I assumed the price they quoted this time didn't include VAT but it did so I was pleasantly surprised when I paid the bill.

Thanks for so much useful information Bill.
Were your tyres 'Energy' or 'Energy Saver', the new 2008 tyre? What is your experience of them noise and gripwise. I ask as Michelin seem to have a confusingly high number of 'energy' named tyres and some appear quite old, and have been around for years.
My new (secondhand) 9-3 has a mixture of Michelin tyres of various 'energy' types. I want to replace them with a matched set. Having said that the rolling resistance of these old tyres is amazing, the car (an auto) glides for miles when the power is off. It almost requires a new driving technique coming off the power 500 yards before traffic lights.

I'm not sure of the exact model and I'm away from home at the moment so can't look. I only got two of them a month or so ago, but replaced the other 2 some time ago (a year ish) and I'm pretty sure they're all the same.

These are on our Jazz and replaced factory fitted Yokohama Apec's. No noticeable difference in noise, I *think* the car rides a bit better (but the Jazz is very bouncy anyway).

Grip is more interesting. The Energy tyres are treadwear rated at 400 - the Aspec's are something like 200. All other things being equal (which I accept they're not) the Energy tyres should grip less. I had quite a "discussion" with Costco about this when I bought the first pair as they insisted on putting the new Energy tyres on the back and moving the half worn Aspsc's to the front. In my opinion the less grippy Energy tyres should have gone on the front but it became a take it or leave it situation. So I swapped them when I got home.

Now the car has Energy tyres all round, in normal use on the Jazz there's no noticeable difference in grip, but we live in a rural area and on slimy back roads I think the Energy tyres are noticeably less keen to grip on turn-in than the Aspec's were.

I reckon a "press-on" type of driver would definitely notice a difference. This is a known issue with "eco" tyres - in fact the Technical boss of Continental has commented that the tyres shouldn't be mixed and drivers switching from non-eco to eco tyres could be caught out.
