A quick follow-up question to my last thread. We have found that the heat-shield on the CAT of SWMBO's Saxo has come loose at one end. A colleague (ex-mechanic) who looked at it suggested I should be able to bond it back together as the shield has just come away from another piece of metalwork. He thinks it was originally crimped or connected with metal tags that have broken or corroded off.
My query is, can anyone recommend a suitable bonding agent that can withstand the high temperatures found in an exhaust? Either that, or does anyone know what it will need to withstand - we have several adhesives at work but I don't know if they will be good enough.
TIA!

The best bonding machine for the job would be a MIG welder.

To follow up from previous posts, the heat shield has now fallen off the cat and been lost. Can anyone say for definite either way if it is necessary and what the risks are if the car is driven without one? Also, is there any easy way to replace it and are they available separately, or are we going to have to either trawl the scrap yards or replace the entire cat?
We really need the cheapest sensible option as money is very tight.
TIA!

If you do long journeys or sit in traffic? essential.
Make one from either aluminium sheet or old biscuit tins.

Find a back street welder, they're few and far between but any local dealer should be able to point you to one.
He'll make one up from scratch and weld it in place. Definitely easier than messing about in scrapyards for something like this.

Leave it alone it won't do any harm there's loads of cars with them missing, the front pipe gets hoter than the cat and that dosen't do any harm.
wasting time, money, effort in my opinion go for a pint instead!!

Just don't park in long grass.

The heat shield is on the top of the cat, between it and the car, so I don't see how long grass has any relevance... :)
This one is confusing us a lot as there seem to be two schools of thought that are completely opposite.... She doesn't do long journeys but you can't escape sitting in traffic in Stockport / Tameside. There does appear to be some sort of additional plate fixed to the underside of the car just where the cat sits - is this a sort of secondary heat shield? We'll find out how much it will cost to get one made and decide from that I think. If anyone has any conclusive arguments that it is absolutely necessary that would help the decision though!

>>If anyone has any conclusive arguments
Think more of the consequences of getting it wrong;
You fit the heat shield when it didn't need one - consequence, you're a few tenners down
You don't fit the heat shield and it does need one - consequence, you burn the car out, risking the life of anyone who's in there.

Cats get red hot. Cars are covered in paint and plastic underseal. There are brake pipes nearby.
If things go wrong, you have a car fire, or no brakes.. or both.
(I've had both at the same time once in a 1960s Mini Estate. I can honestly say it was very very scary).
