Just reading through the latest PlayJag magazine and came across an interesting entry.
A new operation has been launched in the UK to provide short-term comprehensive car and van insurance for periods between 1 and 28 days. All documentation is emailed directly to the customer for immediate printout. Policies are underwritten by Norwich Union. There's also an option to include roadside assistance.
I've just done one of their "Quick Quotes" and they came up with £12.60 for 1 day and £46.20 for 7 days to insure my XJ8.
Available at dayinsure.com
Kevin...
PS. Usual disclaimers apply including "No personal connection".
PPS. HJ, considering the number of questions that appear in the BR about short-term insurance - maybe they'd be a candidate for site advertising or a DT mention.

Not a new service, they've been in operation for some time.
Used them earlier this year when I needed to borrow my sister's car for a couple of days. I'd only have been insured third party if I'd have driven on my policy and wasn't a hassle arranging insurance through dayinsure

I've seen ads for this operation in service stations for at least three years.

On the two occasions I've needed this in the past, I have found my standard insurer quite happy to provide the service.
Privilege insured me for two weeks on my group 19 Fiat Coupe for £20. (No NCD as it was applied to my new car)

This insurance cover does not permit renewal of RFT. Interesting thought that presumably it does not appear on DVLA database, hence driving a currently taxed, MoTd vehicle (when the the original insurance has run out), using this as cover, means that the vehicle can be seized by the police following a vehicle ANPR or other check!
Make sure you print the on line certificate and carry in the vehicle.

I found this useful because my current insurer, The Post Office, doesn't do short term cover on 2nd cars anymore. The only option they could give me was to transfer my insurance to the temporary car and then transfer it back when I got my car back.

I like them, I use the one through Norwich Union's website but I think it's the same firm.
I currently have two cars, a summer one and a winter one, unfortunately my insurers won't touch me for a multi car policy as I'm under 25. I use the Day Insure to get coverage on the Mondeo on the odd occasion that I need to use it, for example I'll be driving to Leeds in a couple of weeks and will probably take that because it's much more comfortable on the motorway and I've got no idea how rough the parking is or isn't.
I like that you can add extra drivers for no charge too.

After watching some of the TV progs which have featured the Police doing ANPR checks, it is unlikely they would believe you even if you did have a print out. They seem to like to believe that their system/database is 100% accurate and correct - whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty!!!!

I was recently asked by a friend to hire a car (a 60K plus sports - not an astra) as their licence is not good for this type of hire. They would then insure the car for their use on this short term insurance.
I declined.
However, would this be legal ?
I assumed that I'd be hit with the hire clauses that forbid sub-hires.
I was also very sceptical that the insurance would be good if their licence was not good for the hire - they assured me this would be no problem.
ps they're still a friend :-)

Well, they'd be driving without the owners permission - which is an offence itself, and one would imagine is a condition of the insurance.

We use this (NU) to allow 24 year old daughter to drive our car when home and her aunts when in Scotland - her flatmates use it when they need to borrow her car for a day or so. You cannot use it to top up insurance, however, if you already hold fully comp. insurance which permits you to drive any other car on 3rd party terms and you must be over 23 for NU.

When I bought another car before I had sold my previous,Zurich offered to cover both cars for two weeks for free.
