hello there, i've had problems with my cyliner head gsaket, i'm on my second attempt to refit one now due to a poor head gasket provided by a store, but what bothers me is that i'm ment to torque the bolts to 40nm and then 60nm and then turn them 180 degrees, but how do i know that each on is exactly 180, cant they give me a accurute torque setting so i definetly know the head gasket is as tight as it should be and i can restin peace instead of having a gut feeling that they're not tight enough! thanx

A good manual will explain the procedure - an angular torque gauge will give the degrees of turn.

>>cant they give me a accurute torque setting....
Using the method given, i.e., a snug torque and then an angle is a **much** more accurate way of tensioning the cylinder head bolts than using a torque.
In a list of accurate methods for tensioning bolts, torque wrenches don't come much higher in the list than impact guns!
Remember, what you are really aiming to do is to stretch the bolt a known amount - the torque you apply is just a rough indicator. As the joint is typically much stiffer than the bolt, if you turn through a known angle, you get an accurate amount of stretch in the bolt.
You might also consider fitting some new bolts. If they have been stretched beyond their elastic limit, they may not be any good any more. Do VW publish a length tolerance for the bolts to enable you to measure and check them?
