Had a bump... need help! - Sunny22
Right, a boy racer drove into me last night. There was no wing damage, i think he bounced off my wheel as it was turned. my traction control light is on now n steering is out, and tracking. Could there be anything else i need to look for? Like my alloy being buckled? Its a 2004 Audi A3 by the way...

Cheers in advance guys...

There is loads you need to look for. Bent / broken suspension & steering parts, the ABS light is a worry could indicate hub damage. Needs to get to a repairer ASAP for checking it does not sound safely driveable. You got his details?

I assume you swapped insurance details as this could be expensive. Regards Peter

Got his number and reg and all that, got someone looking at it now. Only had it a week! He was going about 20mph when he hit me.

I do hope that the number you got actually turns out to be traceable to a known car on the DVLA databse with a correct name and address and that ratface has valid insurance when/if he is located. If this was a hit and run Plod should be very interested. I wish you a quick and favourable outcome to this event!

Not in my experience, even with independent witnesses. Other driver denied it and police didn't follow through - ended up claiming on my own insurance.

If no-one was hurt, they wont want to know.

Sorry Marlot - I should have put "should" in capitals and then followed with "but aren't" in more capitals. They can follow up an assault by one kid on another with a slice of cucumber (True - really!) but don't have resources to follow a £1000 hit and run - barmy!

A Picture of him/her and their car would have been very useful - if in the event the driver/reg and address are false! or he has no insurance.

A wee picture makes life very difficult for the miscreant.

It wasn't a hit and run, should have mentioned that. I've had some work done and so far the bill is 200 pounds, i don't think he is claiming off his insurance, so do i just present a bill to him and say this is what you owe me?

Oh and if he doesnt pay am i within my rights to go to the police? He's only been driving since last thursday...

No. The Police are not debt collectors. If he does not pay its a civil matter.
However under sec 154 Road Traffic Act 1988 you do have the right to ask for and be given his insurance details.
If he fails to provide them he commits an offence which the Police COULD follow up.
I would suggest that you type a suitable letter explaining that you appreciate that has offered to pay for the damage however as a precautionary measure under the above Act and Section he provide you with those details.
Whilst it is comforting legislation ,infact it is somewhat toothless as the insurance company will not pay out unless their client informs them which you cannot make him do.
If its a 'chaved' up car chances are that his insurance would be void but it is still responsible for third party risks. That is of course presuming he has any.

Sunny

you have told your insurance company yes?

At this very moment, he could be making a claim against YOU.

Sunny,
sorry to hear about your accident. There's a lot of doom and gloom in the thread, sad to say, from harsh experience. BUT the probability is that you get your car fixed (you've told your insurance company and given them his details?) and pick it up. Your insurance company pays the bill and gets the money back from his. You may have to pay an excess which you should get back later from your insurance company. The last time I had a bump I gave the miscreant's details to my insurance company and they checked who he was insured with there and then and just happened to mention the company name to me.

Good luck.
