Buying 'Normal' number plate - mss1tw
Is it possible to buy or request a plate from the DVLA? The various number plate websites only allow the numbers 7, 700 and 777 - I want to use 750. I'm guessing those numbers are all dedicated to private plates. I'm just a standard plate, and it wouldn't matter what year it is.

What part are you showing me? Is that basically a "Yes you can do it" or a "Nope, can't be done."

Had all of four hour hours sleep, haven't a chance of reading and comprehending that lot, I'm afraid.

I thought you could buy any number combination that was a multiple of 10, but running a *750*** search produced no results. However, there is a telesales dept, so a call to them might give you a definite yes or no. I think they can put you through from this number 0870 240 0010

MSS1TW - Poor you - you must be more wobbly than Wobblyboot! Hope you have now had some rest and a chance to read or comprehend my last post, which pointed at quite a few 750s. Alternatively the DVLA page on tinyurl.com/zared points at some T1*MSSs at £250 if that's of any interest.

Thankyou Jack! Forums are excellent for keeping awake, though, I've found!

Ignore the username, it's basically meaningless. The plate will be for my bike, and as it is an XRV 750, rather than 'B1K3R' or something equally lame, I would like to get either *750 XRV or, preferably, XRV 750* (Old style)

Only certain people would know it was personal, just the way I'd like it!

If the plate is for a bike, be aware that although you can assign any reg number to a bike, you can't then move it off onto another vehicle at a later date.

Thanks Truckosaurus - it shouldn't be an issue, but at least I know now. I wonder what pathetic reason they have for that restriction...

Eh ? Has this changed, transferred a number from an old CB650 I owned a few years ago to the previous owner onto his Volvo.

just for info

over 2 years ago I asked the DVLA if a certain number had been issued. (W suffix) They said no. I asked if I could buy it - they never answered. I regularly get emails and letters from them offering me plates I have no interest in. The unissued one I asked for (for which I will pay handsomely) is still unissued.

No problem swapping between cars and bikes. I think there may have been in the dim and distant past when bikes/mopeds were given two digit ot two letters to keep the plate short (a long time ago).

Are there any special rules for motorcycles?

No. Motorcycles and mopeds can participate fully in the number transfer arrangements, providing they meet all the normal transfer requirements (see "What are the requirements for participating vehicles?")
