Looking for car insurance quotes recently, they all asked for occupation. Click on their list & I go to Drivers (me being a truckie), then I click on professional driver, which I'm led to believe I am, due to length of training, amount of time spent on the road etc. NOT according to insurance companies I'm not, although a taxi driver is, a chaffeur is & the one that I don't get is >>> A BLOOMING PIZZA/DELIVERY DRIVER. How on earth can a spotty faced pizza delivery driver be more professional than me? What training have they had? How can someone who delivers pizza for about 4hrs per night in quiet traffic in a car/moped be deemed more professional than someone who has had 40hrs intense training & spends at least 9hrs on the road daily in control of a 45ft long 44tonne 15ft high vehicle. I know us truck drivers are looked down upon by the public & car drivers in general & it seems by insurance companies also. Surely an HGV Driver should be in that list & at the top of it or am I getting all hot n bothered over nothing. Anyone any opinions?
Sorry for the rant, jus' wanted to get it off me chest :-}

Spotty faced? 4 hours? Quiet Roads? bit harsh fella!
Our local Dominoes Pizza delivery driver is a lady about 50 years of age, not a spot on her face and she works from 4pm till 12 midnight, so thats 8 hours, 3-4 hours are VERY busy roads around manchester, she does this all day for 5 or 6 days a week, I'd say that qualifies her to be a professional driver. Think your getting wound up over nothing to fair. Just my opinion though.

PS I don't look down on truck drivers, without them the country would be screwed big time.

I don't look down on truck drivers either, they're usually higher up. Maybe if I was going over a bridge or something.
Surely the point, in this case, of the professional driver question is are they a professional driver of a car (possibly the car they're insuring?). If anything, I would guess that this answer loads a bit extra i=on to the premium, rather than taking some off.
What job description did you end up having to go with?

Another thought, although you probably won't like it:
If you couldn't find another description that covered HGV driver, then possibly PIZZA / DELIVERY DRIVER does incluce HGV's? I mean, you are delivering stuff, right?

I think you'll find that those professions you mention are all regarded as *higher* risk than normal.
So I wouldn't complain about it if I were you. It is simply related to an insurer being concerned about the cross over between SD&P, normal business use and unacceptable business use.
You'll have to admit you're not likely to use your truck moon-lighting delivering pizzas or giving people a lift hom from the pub in the evening.

Well I suppose looking at it that way I stand corrected & fussing over nothing. Thanks for putting a different slight on it for me.
P.S Bazzabear HGV drivers are classed as manual workers for insurance.

That'd be because you don't have auto boxes then? ;-)
All right, I'm leaving.....

Oh but funnily enuff 1/4 of our depot trucks are autos & go better than some of the manuals. Can be quite strange going from a 4/5 speed auto to a 12 gear auto though.

I've been a Police Grade 1 Advanced driver for nine years and it doesn't make the slightest difference.

I don't look down on truck drivers. My last 28 years of employment was with a truck component manufacturer, so without truck drivers I would not have had the job.

I know quite a few of you in here don't look down on truck drivers, but here's a little test to try. The next time you meet someone who doesn't know you and they ask what you do, tell them you drive a large truck & watch the look on their face.
Myself personally if people ask what I do I just say I'm a Mobile Logistics Technician
