I fear I know the answer to this one.
When I bought the B it didn´t have the red key. Therefore I am being *exceedingly* careful with the keys I do have. Touch wood etc etc.
Briefly, is there any way to get a new red key through Fiat? Otherwise I will start contacting the previous owners.
Lesson learnt - check for a red key when buying an elderly Fiat...

Bad news I'm afraid. If I remember rightly, Fiat have to create a new red key with new codes and you will need replacement "general" keys. Can't remember exactly, but it was few hundred ££. I hope the previous owners have the original red key. Good luck.

While not arguing with the difficulty and expense of replacing the red (master) key, I understand that the blue (everyday) keys are introduced to the immobiliser by using a set-up sequence with the red key, and provided the mechanical parts of the lock are unchanged you won't need new blue keys.

i think you are basically right but not with the lock but with the immobilisor ring,i read that changing batteries can make the new keys unable to be read but with all the fiats ive had ive never had a problem and sold many without the red key.,
There is a way round anyway but i wouldnt post it on here.

D'oh!
I had forgotten about the problem with the immobiliser needing the red key (to re-enable the old blue keys) if you loose battery power.

I'm sure I've read an inexpensive way of getting a new red key on this forum:

Join and try a search, or post the question there. Someone will know exactly what to do!

it was probably go to a key shop and get them to cut you one(in the red plastic?) to fool the next customer, but the chip wont be there?

I suspect this will come as bad news, Barchettaman.
The FIAT dealer I got my Punto from warned me at the time that FIAT don't (can't?) replace red keys - if yours goes missing, they have to replace the immobiliser. Apparently the records at the factory were mixed up so they can't always match a chassis number to the correct immobiliser code.
Whoever said you need your red key to "teach" the immobiliser code to a new blue key is also right.
You should also have a card with the unlock code for the immobiliser on it. IIRC, if the electrical system is disabled (e.g. changing the battery) you can use this to activate the immobiliser afterwards instead of the red key. You enter the code by pressing the accelerator - so for 132... its one press, pause, three quick presses, pause, two quick presses etc.
I haven't had to go through this procedure, so I stand open to correction, but it might help get you out of trouble if the worst happens!
For other FIAT owners who do have a red key, some locksmiths can cut copies. Might be an idea to get one made before the worst happens and you lose the original. Must take my own advice and get one over the weekend - as I've been telling myself for the past three years...

According the OP he HAS lost the red key - that is the problem!

As will these:

Cost is around £100, apparently. They reprogramme the ECU and give you a new red key.

How old is your Fiat, as most of the later models no longer use a Red key.
What model is it, is it a Barchetta ??
