AC/CC and misty windows - mss1tw
Do owners of cars with AC/CC find them a pain with regards to misting? On colder mornings like today, it mists up easily and I have to put the AC to clear it (And even that takes ages).

I set it to hot often to try and 'dry it out' as it were, but it makes no difference. >:-(

Make sure the vents aren't set to recirculate.
AC/CC and misty windows - mss1tw
I always leave that off except when it's very hot or very humid (Might as well use pre cooled/dried air in those circumstances)

Yes i do find it a bit of a pain. They seem to be designed to have the AC running all the time. Switch the AC off and my honda seems to mist up very quickly.

It has been mentioned here that the condensate drain tube may be blocked if you are having trouble with misting. I don't think mine is, so just a feature of the car probably.

I find the same with my Renault, it always seems to be misty. I am yet to be convinced of the worth of a/c in the UK.

Yep. As far as I am concerned it's feature of cars with climate control, not with a regular ventilation system with AC tacked on.

On my car with CC, I simply set the controls to demist and within seconds, the screen is cleared, warm or cold engine. THe best one was my Volvo, which knew to set to demist without my telling it.

I love AC in the UK. Its getting warmer and wetter out there.

Yep, I only normally only use the a/c when it's hot, or in short bursts the rest of the time, but the last few days it's been impossible to turn it off - both our cars just steam up as soon as it's turned off.

I always leave my AC on. The climate control does all the heating and cooling and all I seem to have to do is set a temperature and tell it that it can use the AC if it likes. There's a windscreen demister button which I press and the windscreen is demisted with lightening speed. Far better than any other car I've ever had. What's 1mpg when you get demisting like that?

Life is complex; it has real and imaginary parts.

Yes, my 03 Mondeo mists up remarkably quickly if the AC is not switched on. I have to increase the temperature if I want demisted windows and no AC. Or open the windows a bit. In the grand scheme of things, if every AC car behaves like that then that adds up to an awful lot of extra fuel.

My 1997 Alfa is much more difficult to mist up even with the recirculate button activated.

I think some A/C systems are poorly designed and condensate hangs around in the evaporator chamber. Misting can only be due to water in the system.
On my Nissan QX I get misting for literally a couple of seconds after starting on a cold morning. Then the CC blower kicks in and its gone by the time I've backed out of my drive.

An essential part of minimising condensation on the windscreen and interior windows is to keep them spotlessly clean (I use AutoGlym's superb window cleaner).

A film of deposits coming through the ventilation system gradually builds up on the glass and the condensation "sticks" to it - keeping the glass as clean as possible means that the condensation can be cleared very rapidly.

Windows demist very quickly using CC in my Passat.Especially if the dedicated demist button is depressed.
Hardly ever need to use the rear window heater.
Best heating and ventilation system I've had.

How many windscreens does your Ford have?

Seriously, marvellous though they are, some people find that the pattern on the heated windscreens proves distracting, particularly at night because of oncoming headlights emphasising it.

Yes, you can see the wires, but once you get used to them they disappear. The screen takes a lot of juice though, to the extent that the wipers run slower than normal. Luckily the heater only needs to be used for short bursts.

Coming back to the OP's original point I agree. On all the cars I've had that have been fitted with A/C (Focus, Mondeo, Vectra) they all mist up inside at the first drop of rain outside. The only way to get them clear relatively quickly is to put the A/C (or C/C) on as the air in such cars has a dehumidifying effect.

On older cars I've had that didn't have A/C fitted I never had such problems with misting so I'm guessing it must be something to do with the amount of moisture in the ventilation systems of A/C fitted cars.

I never had any problems with the original Ford Quickclear screen on either of my Foci, but the current replacement Solarshield Safevue is rubbish. If I ever need a replacement again I shall insist on the genuine article ~ I understand that Autoglass fit genuine screens.

I have both a heated windscreen, and a windscreen demist function in the New Passat, so I have the choice.

Very smug (more so than a Ford owner!)

No mist this morning - this morning was slightly warmer than previous mornings... Any of you find that as well?

Yup

Its almost entirely down to the use of pollen filters. They severely restrict the amount of fresh air entering the car.

In the old days you could almost see daylight through your vents and a good old blow of fresh air you got.

Very good point that, I'll change it when I get a chance.

Marc,
I had trouble with all my previous cars misting up in cold/damp weather.
None of them had a/c or cc.
Think Passat has a wonderful system.Clear windows all round.Even with a leaking pollen filter housing.

If blocked up, maybe. On my cars I can wind the blower up to full and the draught blows my hair about - no problem there. I change the pollen filter once a year and blow through the condenser outlet at the same time.
