Spotted a car in the twilight tonight. Looked like a Merc E class saloon as it approached me, then as it slid silently past me, I could see it was a.....ur....urm.....eh? Then I saw on the back "Cedric" What the hell is that?

Interesting site - but I reckon he's got his engine codes wrong. I'm sure it has the VQ30DE engine, not VG30DE.

'Cedric' probably sounds quite good in Japanese - like 'Clio' sounds good in English....

Actually there is another Nissan that is similar in size to a Cedric, but looks a bit like a Bentley, quite nice really. I think the name begins with an 'S' - can't remember the full name though.

Nissan Cefiro. Like a slightly bigger QX. Teana is another god
looking big Nissan.

Cima was what I was thinking of.

Cefiro is the asia-pacific name for the Maxima/QX - it is more or less identical AFAIK. There are some Cefiro's in the UK and also some Cima's (grey imports, obviously).

At least Nissan show a bit more imagination than some: Bluebird was a good name that deserved a more exotic car; and they made a coupe some time ago with the charming name of Fairlady.

Fairlady is still in production, I think.

we knew the fairlady as the 300ZX

what about the nissan silvia?

Do they assume that the British prefer numbers to names? I'm not sure we do. Ford have not normally thought so, and if anything, pleasant names like Fabia and Octavia help to sell Skodas.

There was also the Nissan 100A Cherry and the 1600J Violet.
The Cedric was the standard taxi for some years in most of Asia.

Indeed so: the name has been around 40+ years to my knowledge and was the mainstay of the Hong Kong taxi driver.

I'm in Taiwan at the moment, the biggest Nissan I've seen is the Cefiro, the next step up from a Primera I think? A quick look here: www.autoindex.org/maker.plt?no=87 shows that they still make a Nissan President and also the Cima which is quite big.
