02 Vectra Cambelt Change - GazKaz
Hi all!

I'm about to do a cambelt change on my 1.8 Vectra as it at nearly 41,000 miles, including new roller/tensioner.

My question is: Is it still possible to do without the specialist tools needed, ie; camshaft and crankshaft locking tools, as I don't have access to them!

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Gary.

There was a model change in 2002. The old model is on a 40000 mile change, the new one is listed as 60000 miles.

In both cases a variety of Kent-Moore special tools are listed, including cam, crank and auxilliary belt tensioner locking tools. You could probably get by without them and improvise, but it does look rather an involved procedure if you are not experienced with this engine.

Hi Aprilia

My car was registered in Jan 2002, so it's the old model before the facelifted one that is now out, so I assume it's a 40K interval.

I have changed cambelts before on my old Nova and my Dad's Belmont so I'm not a complete stranger to doing this, although it will be the first time on a 16V engine! I have a Haynes on standby to guide me through the procedure.

Have you any idea where I could source these tools?

Thanks in advance!

Gary

Hi Gaz,
Try Draper tools, part no. 61276 GM twin cam locking tool, approx £3.50 + vat. Available through any Draper stockist.
Or try Franklin tools (Tel:0114 272 1429) part no. TA472 camshaft locking tool, £14.00 + vat, this tool is metal where as the draper one is plastic).
Any decent car parts supplier or factor should stock these tools.
Hope this helps.

Hi Pastyman

Thanks for the advice!

Just got on to the Draper web-site and found the camshaft locking tool.

Any ideas where I can get the crankshaft tool from. Failing this, would I be able to lock the crankshaft by leaving the car in gear, or would it still move slightly?

Thanks again

Gaz.

Hi Aprilla has the recent vauxhall vectra got an improved cambelt design compared to the previous model. talking to a ex vauxhall service manager the otherday who is know employed by a Honda stealership, says vectra were known to break cambelts at 30k, Hondas he says are bullet proof, what is it that honda do that makes thier belt so robust compared to vauxhall...

Thanks

The latest Vectra ('Vectra C') is still belt and the layout looks the same as on the Vectra B - but the change interval has gone up to 60k miles. Not sure why this is - maybe better belt or the pulleys are wider?

Never heard of a Honda snapping a belt under normal circumstances. making a reliable belt drive system is hardly rocket science - problems occur when manfrs. try to save money and cut corners.

Only the diesels and the 2.2 petrol. It *might* also be a chain on the 3.2 petrol, but not 100% sure on that one.

The 2.2 petrol uses two chains - the lower of which is rather tortuously routed - don't know how long that will last.

The 3.2 uses a belt - on 120kkm/96 month replacement cycle.
