ford focus st250 - being sold a car with private plates - lckldm

hi people. what would you guys do

i was searching for a focus st. i found one at lookers/vauxhall when i went to view the car it had a private plate on. i spoke to the sales women we was both happy to do the deal. i put a deposit down on the 17/8/13 but i said to her what happens about the private plate. she said dont worry the guy who ownes the plates has allready sent the paper work of to dvla for retension. she said dont worry by the time you sign for the car we should have the paper work back from dvla to say what number plate goes on your new car then we can tax it at the same time.. so after a couple of days i phoned up asking if they have recieved the logbooks. they said not yet. but then she said dont worry if the worse comes to the worse you can drive of on them plates. so i thought ok lets sort out the finance. so on the 30/8/13 we brought the car financed signed for. i drove away with the st with lookers 5 days insurance. she said dont worry by the time your 5 days insurance is up we will have the logbooks. 5 days have past, still no logbooks. so i phoned my insurance up to take insurance out on the st. i insured the car on the private plates. i phoned up lookers/ vauxhall told them what ive done, they said thats fine. i asked them if theres any news on the paper work. she said she has spoken the the bloke and he has recived the paper work from dvla and when he gets chance he would drop them in to lookers. so i thought ok its only a matter of a couple of days now and ill have the original plate on my car.. couple of days past not heard anythink. this was getting me angry. so i said im phoning head office.phoned head office explained to the guy what the problem was with the plates. he said. let me have a look on the computer. he got the guys details on the screen he then said he lives 150 miles.away so ive been lied to all the time. so i said well he wont be dropping the paper work in. he then said give us till 12oclock tomorrow if we dont get the paper work in the post at 12oclock we will have to sort out plan b. i phoned next day guess what no paper work. he said plan b was to give me a courtesy car.he said i would advise you not to drive your st untill we recive the paper work from the guy. because his saying if the dvla has put his private plate on retension my st is not registerd. to that plate anymore. so im paying car insurance and car finance for a car i carnt use. what would you guys do. as no one nows how long its gunna be. sorry about the rabbling on and the bad grammer. am i entitled to ask for a like to like vehicle. or my money back. ive had the car over 2 weeks now. thanks liam

Having closed their local offices DVLA are struggling to cope doing plate swaps at Swansea.

I'm in a vaguely similar position in that we've bought a new car and need to swap Mrs B's personal plate off our older car onto new (63) one. Old car, which is being transferred to me, will then revert to its original 05 plate.

I know from checking online that DVLA have done the computer input. Personal plate shows details for new car, mine is KU05XXX and the 63 reg is showing no trace. As of saturday however no sign of paperwork in post. It may be that issue of new tax discs and 'authority to issue plate', work previously done at LO is taking time.

In meantime we're carrying on driving both cars as are other two insured drivers. All know what's going on and will pass 'attitude test' with any copper who might stop them.

My advice to OP is 'keep calm and carry on'. Position is different to mine in that paperwork has issued but has not caught up. Dealer appears to be standing by as best he can with offer of courtesy car. Not clear to me OP has been lied to as (a) 150 miles is not far and prev owner may be around regularly (b) The dealer you mention is a large chain and it may be that they mean he will drop off at branch local to him. Realistically your problem is not with dealer but previous owner. Would be helpful if dealer could tell you what new number is. Alternatively can OP attempt, perhaps with dealers assistance, to register car using the 'no V5' route (form V62?)?

Son reports that my authority to get new plate, new tax disc disc and replacement MoT arrived in post at home today. Similar letter for SWMBO presumably with matching content for her personal plate.

Maybe DVLA are getting on top again. I posted form work off to them on 07 September.

Curiously, the tax disc, new MoT and 'authority to make up plate' that arrived today were post marked DVLA Beverley, presumably an outstation at one of the old regional offices.

Beverley was, IIRC, the County Town for the old East Riding.
