MINI Cooper - Best minor scratch & dent repair insurance - swifty

My wife has just purchased a new Mini Cooper and of course the dealer is pushing the Mini Smart Protect insurance for £500 for 3 years of small scratch/dent insurance.

Has anyone got recommendations on better options they've used, I can see companies like car2cover and ALA do products much cheaper than Mini's for example?

Thanks.

I would want to know more details about the policy, particularly who they would be entrusting the work to in the event of a claim. I've seen some pretty poor quick fixes by the mobile repair people.

IMHO if insurance isn't a legal requirment, or the cost is good value compared to potential claim amount don't bother.

All cars will pick up knocks and dings and you can end up chasing your tail having them sorted out. Save your cash in an account and spend £100 when you come to trade or sell to on a valet and polish.

Like most other 'insurance' or warranties, you are accepting a wager, i.e. paying out on the offchance that you might pay a lot more if something bad happens. Try to guess the likelihood of having to pay over £500 to fix 'minor scratches or dents' in 3 years. Probably the wise course is to put the £500 in a piggy bank and enjoy it 3 years later. You could spend a bit of it on a small dent, but not all.

Your choice - also depends how fussy you are about small scratches.

This is probably more of a concern to those who have the cars for a set period of time on some form of pcp/lease agreement and are worried about large bills to correct damage on return.

Like all things judge what your previous damage experience has been and where the vehicle is to be driven and parked, if the wheels are massive with low profile tyres then kerb damage is very likely (is that covered because fancy wheels cost fancy money to refurb) and check what's in the small print and check what are other 'genuine' users saying of their experiences.

Our cars are older and we have a good relationship with a one man and his dog bodyshop, so every few years if various things need doing we'll drop the vehicle off and get them all done, we would be way out of pocket paying for insurance cover of this type.

Being very careful driving and where you park

Parking well away from main doors supermarket - park far from others in shopping centre carpark and walk the extra 100 metres

Parking on the end of a row reduces parking dings by 50%

Do not park next to old & new large SUV, stay well away from pick-ups, transit vans

Do not park under trees - bird poo is very damaging

Of the £500 cost at Mini - put it in another bank account and draw out some money if & when you need a Chips Away type service.

I have needed the Chips Away man 3 times in the last 30 years and the dent man twice (once I was in the car and the other driver paid as it was his fault, wind caught the door as he was getting out (£100 IIRC)
