Do we need more of these b****y vehicles proliferating our byroads and highways?

Now you can get yourself a reliable Fiat. The stupidly named Fullback (nearly as bad as Defender), essentially a Mitsubishi L300, will be joined by Renault's version of the Nissan Navara. Then Mercedes introduce their posh version, basically a pimped up, plush Nissan.

The rise of the leviathan SUV is bad enough. Now we have to endure more vehicles bigger than the owners need that they're usually incapable of driving properly/responsibly.

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - Bolt

I agree, with our small roads and idiot drivers who have no idea the size of thier motors I reckon we will end up gridlocked, around bromley where the kids are dropped off outside Schools, it takes ages to get past these motors because they do not seem able to get through gaps between cars

annoying thing is they blame you for being in there way when its there fault because they wont go through a gap even though its big enough for them

I cant see it getting any easier as more people seem to be going for the larger motors

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - RT

It's a growth market, every brand will get them. Like SUVs, they aren't "leviathans" as they occupy about the samne road space as a Ford Mondeo.

We not talking US-style trucks here.

Why do kids need to be taken to school - even as an Infant I walked to the local school with older (9-10) girls put in charge.

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - RaineMan

I saw a writeup of a double cab pickup that was over 19 feet long. It was suggested that it could be used for the school run and you could throw your bikes in the back at the weekend. I suspect the author hadn't taken it to a busy supermarket car park or had an IQ less than his waist size!

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - Wackyracer

When I watched a TV program some years ago, the arrogant man said he had to take his kid to school in the huge 4x4 because of safety.

He then ranted on about people shouldn't be allowed to drive near the school in Transit vans, totally missing the fact that his 4x4 was just as big as a Transit and quite frankly I'd rather be run over by a Transit than a 4x4 with a solid steel bullbar on the front.

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - gordonbennet

Carefully chosen to avoid the not so simple, they are the last reasonably simple durable vehicle you can buy, plus commercial VED rates and VAT reclaimable for those qualifying.

Just as nice to drive as any car if specified well and bought from the right maker, they don't have bullbars any more because they were banned from being fitted to new vehicles some years ago, around 2006 if my memory serves.

They're driven no differently to any other vehicle these days, incompetent ignorant arrogant tailgating bullying fools covers an increasing number of drivers of vehicles of all sizes and types.

As a vehicle for buying for private use they can make a lot of sense, if we didn't have the dogs i would probably have bought another Hilux instead of the Landcruiser, but the Hilux load bed is a bit too high for Spaniels so another Landcruise but this time with height adjustable suspension it is, do i need it?, no, but even in 2016 Britain (not heading for Brexit, amazing :-) we don't yet to get permission from a good comrade so i'll stick to my choice of vehicle for my reasons and leave others to their choice too.

Would i have a Mercedes or Bentley or Landrover pick up, no, but then i wouldn't buy any of their current vehicles anyway.

No not to those who can drive and manoeuvre them, but a lot cannot and cause havoc in small roads. reminds me of fiat 500s and old minis that creep through 7ft width restrictions because they do not know the width of the car!

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - expat
the Hilux load bed is a bit too high for Spaniels

Even the tailgate of our i30 is too high for our spaniel to jump up now that he is getting old. We have a little box we keep in the back and put down for him to climb up onto so he can get in.

"Now you can get yourself a reliable Fiat."

A contradiction in terms, surely?

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - Fishermans Bend

Max kerb weight of a Mondeo is 1656kg. Ranger max kerb weight is 2110kg. Without question the Ranger etc are unwelcome leviathans.

Anyone got a last shape Navara? NCAP adult occupant rating was one star...........drive carefully. The last time any vehicle had a rating that bad was the Rover 100.

GordonBennet, a good level headed reply. I think too many people will buy a ute in UK just to make themselves look butch and intimidate other road users. I can see you don't.

"Ute" is an Australian-specific term for cars like the Vauxhall Maloo, a rebadged Holden, not normally used for European/Asian "pickups" or American "trucks"

Was introduced to the term ute in various of Nevil Shute's stories set in rural Australia. Described a robust pick up of sort used on outback farms etc, off road, over the rough and gullies without loss of traction.

Is current usage different?

In South Africa they're known as a Bakkie.

The rise of the b****y ute/pick-up truck - madf

On local single track roads, anything larger than a Mark1 Land Rover is too big. The drivers of 4x4s have to reverse to get to a passing place. Drivers of most big 4x4s are as useless at reversing as their 4x4s are on the road.. So they keep on dual track roads.

There are genuine users of 4x4s locally but they don't use Porsche 4x4s, nor do they collect/deliver their little darlings from/to school in one..And when it comes to ice oin the roads, their 4x4s are as useless as anything else- and the drivers are worse...

oh no John Boy, i have 40 lorry years and well over 3 million miles worth of aptly descriptive terms to be going on with, single fire mode i could probably make another 40 years worth of insults, trouble is i haven't got 40 years left so rapid fire will have to do.

Sooner you than me Madf, they've (corrupt politicians elected by fools) ruined and changed forever so much of our country and way of life over my 61 years that i really don't want to see what more they can do to the place should i make to 110.

Either voters voted for them - so it's the voters' fault.

Or people did not vote - so they cannot complain as non voters are a waste of space.

Or voters think there is a magic money tree and politicians are trying to find it :-)

There is much in what you say, unfortunately if you go into a shop and all that is for sale is counterfeit soiled and utterly useless repulsive goods, you don't buy anything, and for too long as well you know we've had interchangeable identikit mainstream politicians who if you met them in the street (yeah right) you'd be hard placed to work out which party they represented, they don't of course they represent themselves but mainly people who pay to bankroll the whole ponzi scheme.

as always there are exceptions to this who are honest and straight whom i respect whether i agree with them or not, such as Dennis Skinner, Frank Field and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Maybe for the last 30 years we've had the governments we as a nation, not individuals, deserve.

Not as i'm in the least bothered by it at all any more, i used to worry about the state of our country but in all honesty its almost beyond saving and not enough people prepared to do their bit, its certainly beyond paying the debts that successive governments (who really do believe in magic money) have run up in ours and our childrens names, not as any of this will matter a jot when Clinton gets elected and starts the war to end them all..,so don't lay too many odds at Ladbrooks that you'll make it to 110 will you..:-))

Wow so negative GB, I can't help thinking how much better the UK is from my vague memories of the 60's and 70's and how despite having had great opportunity to succeed myself my 23 and 19 year sons have even more opportunities (despite the brevity vote), I'd love to go back and relive my 20's and 30's now in 2016! Let's not forget that as a country we're a bit skint because we've spent so much on pensions and health care for our and our parents generation without asking for enough back.

They are being bought by the masses because they offer space and some defence against road speed humps and pot holes. They are also as well equipped and fairly decent to drive as a lot of passenger cars.

Of course the recent phase of people buying bikes and needing to transport them everywhere is also probably a bit of a thing as well.

I drive a Navara every day as part of my work and I certainly would never buy one with my own money, that is for sure. Nor would I want one if I did not head off road.

All pickups are cheapskate commercial vehicles underneath, and the majority of them do not crash well at all, child and passenger safety is not good, and the driver isn't much better off. Different game in SUVs but people assume that bigger=safer but that is not the case. Of course having a heavier vehicle which is rear drive can also take more skill to drive.

I can reverse mine anywhere, a by product of having to use country lanes constantly.

The other good thing is that with a canopy on the back, the dog can ride in the load bay and well away from the passenger compartment which is good because he has a prediliction for getting covered in filth. Pull out dog-beg and hose out when required. Try that in an estate car.
