Volkswagen Tiguan - VW TSI - pulley coming apart - help needed - JSW71

Hi

Be grateful for thoughts / input on my problem.

Have a VW 1.4TSI Tiguan, owned since new (8/12/12) serviced by same VW dealership, last service (30k on 16/11/15, with mileage of 18,452). Today started car and heard a screeching sound. Called recovery man and advised I have a pulley coming apart at 19,635 miles. Car can't be moved and will need to sort it out.

Will need to speak to VW service on Monday. Appreciate I'm 6 weeks out of warranty, but this does seem very unlucky. Also seems that there are loads of historic problems with these engines, which seem to be mitigated by the recent wet weather.

Trying to construct a case to try and mitigate the financial pain as much as possible. Would welcome any thoughts from you all.

Thanks in advance.

Can you identify the role of the pulley concerned?

Thanks.

It is on the right hand side of the engine (ie. the drivers side). Repairman said it could be coming off, or the teeth are damaged. Won't know until it has been inspected. Told me not to drive the car, even a couple of miles to the garage, as would cause the engine to seize.

Hope that helps.

The description as of a "screeching noise" sounds like the crankshaft pulley inner /harmonic damper outer has become unbonded-not uncommon on many engines, but at less than 20k miles?

Is this the EA111 or EA211 engine?

EA111 has exhaust manifold/turbo at the front of the engine bay and oil filter is high above alternator

EA211 has exhaust manifold/turbo at the read of the engine bay and oil filter low down

Thanks both. Not sure what it is, but suspect it is probably EA211. Seems like I'm dealing with 2 issues, problems with the 1.4 TSI 160 twin charge and potentially TSI related issues, which are well documented on the internet:

Also the AutoBid article of April 2012.

Seems like this is affecting lots of people. Will speak to VW UK on Monday.

That old chestnut. Sadly (for you), problems with this engine feature quite a bit here (try a search of the forum [as well as through the VW Golf 1.4 twin-charger] for more) and on the Net.

Hopefully the non-supercharged belt-cam 1.4 TSi ACT (cylinder-on-demand version, 150bhp) will prove more reliable long term (I'm potentially looking at buying a Golf or Leon with that engine), though no consolation to you, at least VAG know of the problem - you never know, maybe (in the wake of 'Dieselgate') they may give you some goodwill for any parts replacements for your engine's issue, especially if you've had the car religiously serviced at a main dealer throughout its life thus far.

Best of luck.

Seems that this engine had loads of problems and then dropped. Problems were well known, as an extract from e-mail exchange with Chris Craft (UK Director of VW Cars) and administrator of Scirocconet – May 2011

“We have received reports that a number of vehicles with the 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS power unit have experienced certain issues with engine performance."

From Hilton Holloway AutoCar - October 2014 - http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/volkswagen/scirocco/first-drives/2014-volkswagen-scirocco-14-tsi-uk-first-drive-review)

“…the troublesome 1.4 TSI engine is the 160bhp Twincharger which has a turbo and a supercharger.”

It would have been good for VAG to have raised them and given me the option of a future warranty. Car has been serviced by the same dealer and has an FSH. However, post "Dieselgate" we know how VAG operates. This is going to be my last VW after 12 plus years.

I have Paul Willis' (UK CEO) e-mail address and will see what I can get of out them tomorrow.
