My Volkswagen Passat's Tiptronic gearbox is rattling. What could be wrong with it?

I have owned my 2002 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI with a Tiptronic gearbox for a few months. Recently I have noticed a rattle noise coming from, I believe, the auto box or thereabouts. I know this because when Drive “D” is selected and I pull up at the lights, with my car windows down I can hear the rattle. When I select Neutral “N” the noise goes away. If I select the lower gears i.e. 4, 3 or 2 it rattles, even when the car is not moving. When I start to drive off the rattle remains, say up to 10 to 15mph, and then the noise goes away. As I slow back down to below 15mph and when then I come to a stand still again, I can hear the rattle. When I select Reverse there is no noise.

I'd guess that the rattle must be coming from the torque converter that won't be churning when the selector is in N, but will be when in D or in Tiptronic mode. Pay a visit to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk
