My automatic 1995 Ford Galaxy is suffering ongoing gearbox problems.

I have a 1995 Ford Galaxy automatic. Recently I've had a problem with the brake lights and not able to select drive when running. I have managed to temporarily fix the old brake light switch while a new one is on the way, and I can now engage drive. I am having another problem now though, which started at the same time as the switch started to fail. When I pull away sometimes in drive there is nothing, then suddenly it engages. It's the same in reverse. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's worrying. I've had a new MAF and topped up the gearbox oil. I've not changed the oil, though. Any ideas?

It's 1995 and this was never a great autobox, so you may have to face the possibility that the torque converter is finally giving out.
