What can I do to protect my number plate from cloning?

I have just received a letter from a car parking enforcement company, telling me that a car with my plate had overstayed at a Sainsbury's car park (no fine this time). This was in Stoke-on-Trent on 19 Aug. I have never even been to Stoke-on-Trent. What should I do to try and protect myself against any trouble that may arise from another car with my plate? Inform the police? The DVLA? Ask the enforcement company to double check the plate recognition?

I think this may have been a one-off misreading of the registration, but if it happens again a few times the answer is to change your registration. Possibly buy a cheap 'personal' registration or apply to the DVLA for a different age-related registration on the grounds that yours has been cloned.
