Looking for a second car with low running costs and street cred - will the Ford Focus fit the bill?

I am a 19-year-old lad who has had a 1.0-litre 3-door T-reg Volkswagen Polo for 18 months now, and I am looking to move on to something bigger and more powerful. With insurance, tax, service costs, street cred and a budget of £1800-£2500 all brought into account, I thought I couldn't go far wrong with either a 1.6 Ford Focus (51-54 models) or a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 (same age). Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

The Focus is the better car of the two, and the 3-door has a more 'sporty' look without a high insurance premium.
