Should I buy a 2011 Audi A3 1.8 TFSI with 18,790 miles for £12,600 or a 2014 Nissan Qashqai 1.6 petrol with 20,531 miles for £12,500? Are there any problems to look out for?

I'd far rather have the Audi, but the 1.8 T engine can have timing chain and piston oil ring problems. To have a 1.6 petrol engine, the Qashqai must be the old model Qashqai and this engine wasn't much cop. Low geared and not enough torque for the motorway. Give that a miss. Check them both out at www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ specially the Good & Bad sections.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.

Comfortable to drive with a robust interior, good engines, popularity means lots of choice on the used market.
