Is a five-year-old catalytic converter really halfway through its life?

On saturday I had my catalytic converter cut off while my car was parked in a restaurant car park. I have fully comp insurance with a £250 excess. I reported the incident to the insurer, who sent their repair company to collect the car. I also informed the police. Today the repair company rang to inform me that the insurer wanted me to pay 20 per cent of the cost of the new exhaust, plus vat and also the £250 excess. They say that the exhaust is part-worn. The car is five years old, just passed its MOT and has only done 50,000 miles. If the door had to be replaced, would this be counted as part-worn?

It's true that at five years old a catalytic converter could be considered to be halfway through its useful life, in the same way as tyres and brake discs and pads.
