Have I been sold an unregistered Ford Mondeo for a pre-registered price?

Last week I signed up for a 10-plate Ford Mondeo Titanium X hatchback at £17,995 - bargain! I also part-exchanged the wife's Volkswagen Golf 1.6 for £6000. I rang the salesman to arrange a swap the day after sorting out my finance this weekend, but he tells me some story that the car was registered only in June and I can't have it until September - three months from registration. Is this right or have they made a cock-up and sold me an un-registered car at a pre-registered price?

It's a pre-reg and has to remain registered to the first keeper for a contracted period. No reason why they can't let you have it on some sort of leasing arrangement in the meantime, though.
