Could I pre-order a car and delay registration until after the VAT rate change?

I am sure that I have read somewhere recently that it would be possible to pre-order and pay for a new car before the VAT change takes effect (at the current rate) and to delay registration until after the change, but I have been unable to find any confirmation. I asked at an Audi dealer the other day and was told that it was not possible. Can you please advise? If it is possible to do that, how long could registration be postponed? Just days, or maybe until the year number change in March? I am not in any rush, but a saving in VAT would be welcome.

That was possible last year before VAT went up from 15 per cent to 17.5 per cent. But as far as I know they are ruling against it this time round. The increases are tiny anyway. Only about £440 on a £20k car.
