Should our 18-year-old son buy a 2004 Renault Clio or 2003 Vauxhall Corsa?

Our 18-year-old son is taken by either an 04-reg Renault Clio 1149cc Dynamique with 55,000 miles, three doors (and CD player) with two owners, or an 03-registered 1199cc Vauxhall Corsa Club with five doors, previously owned by Swansea Council (but with a cassette player). It is his first car, the insurance costs look like being identical (but vast). Of the two, which would you recommend?

We'd suggest the Corsa over the Clio, although neither has an unblemished reliability record and there's little in it. The Ford Fiesta is a better car then either of these in terms of driving, build quality and reliability. We'd also suggest looking at a SEAT Ibiza, pretty much a Volkswagen Polo underneath but better value for money.
