Why is our BMW 3 Series' 3-year warranty expiring early?

My business bought a pre-registered (July 2007) BMW 3 Series estate with 10 miles on the clock from a BMW dealership in December 2007. At the same time we purchased a BMW 5-year service package starting from the purchase date in December, which cost £1340. We are now being asked if we want to renew the 3-year warranty at £427 per year, dating from July 2010. At no point in the car buying process were we told that the warranty wouldn't run concurrently. We believed that as they were running the servicing from December the warranty would run concurrently. So is this fair of BMW, especially as they were the previous owner, and the car had only travelled 10 miles? We have spoken to BMW and their dealer and both insist this is reasonable. We hope you can bring some common sense to this situation.

It's standard practice, I'm afraid and one of the prices you pay for the savings on a pre-reg car. You lost six months warranty, but (hopefully) made a decent saving on the list price of the car. A warranty always starts from the date of registration. If you plan to take out a new warranty, then it's worth shopping around.
