Replacement engine for four year old Volkswagen

I have a four year old Volkswagen people carrier bought brand new and serviced by Volkswagen. Recently it has been losing power and the dealer is charging £1000 to decide whether the engine needs replacing. They have assured me that there will be no goodwill offer from Volkswagen if the engine does need replacing. I feel very strongly about the complacent attitude being adopted by Volkswagen. Do I have any redress as am completely flumoxed by the possible need for a new engine for a four year old car which has a full service history.

Since there is nothing to gain and everything to lose by going to the Volkswagen dealer, take it to an independent Volkswagen/Audi specialist to find out what is wrong and, depending on the outcome (and the service history of the car), decide whether to attempt to sue the supplying dealer for the cost of any repairs or replacement that might be necessary.
