Daily commuter advice

My girlfriend is about to start a new job 30 miles from home driving on the M25 then M23. Not being the most secure driver I wanted to get her something with a little road presence and also something that if she bangs it we won't cry about.

I found a 1998 Subaru Legacy LX 2.0 with 47k miles on the clock for £350 with one previous owner, a few scratches to the bumper and no other visible signs of damage. I will check it out but wondered whether you'd recommend it as a car for her to get used to the daily commute, being 4x4 I hope it will handle well for her?

£350 is less than a week's pocket money. But when buying a sophisticated car for £350 you have to expect faults and one or more of these faults could leave her stranded on the hard shoulder, which rather defeats your strategy.
