Which car do you recommend for high mileage daily commuting?

I need your advice to find my new car because I don't know the UK market very well, and I am getting mixed messages from everyone. In the next 12-16 months I'll be covering 1000 motorway miles on a weekly basis (a personal commute, no loads carried). I have no specific brand preference, but I'd like to keep the total cost of ownership as low as possible (fuel, service costs, tyres) and I'd like to be able to sell the car on quickly with the least loss when this job is over. A decent travelling experience is key (reliability, comfort and low noise) given that I will spend four hours in the car every day. My budget is around £8000. I'll probably get something from a car supermarket. Would you be able to give me any direction?

We'd suggest a Ford Mondeo - it's reliable and ideal for motorway driving thanks to a forgiving ride and a comfortable cabin. At £8000 you're on the crossover point between the current shape and previous model but both are good cars for what you're after. We'd suggest going for the previous shape model as you'll get more for your money. Go for a TDCi diesel which is economical but pokey enough for motorways. Our other recommendation would be a Toyota Avensis with the D-4D diesel engine in. Both these models are available at most car supermarkets within your budget.
