Why is my Audi A3 so noisy?

There is a very distinct but unexplained noise on my Audi A3 (2003). It is a "booming", reverberating, repetitive noise - it is similar to typical road noise, yet perhaps not quite the same.

It seems to be associated with the speed one is travelling at. Perhaps just above 40mph is the worst. It is less noticeable both above and below this speed. Tyres (Goodyear) are in good condition and at recommended pressures. Any ideas?

If these are relatively low profile tyres and if they are more than 2/3 worn, then tyre noise increases markedly due to more 'rubber' being permanently in contact with the road surface.
